Marquis (2 years and $16.25M) to the Mariners

Sexson (1 year and $15.5M) to the Yankees

Damon (2 years and $26M) and $4M cash in 2009 to the Cubs

Does it have any merit?

Damon would be a big name acquisition, but where would he play? Put him in left and move Soriano to right?

I was thinking he could play in CF, and Pie and Murton could platoon in RF.

Wouldn't be a bad alternative to Fukudome at all. We only pay 4M more per year and upgrade from Marquis to Damon. As per the usual...did you hear this, or is it just an idea?

From a production standpoint that would probably be solid, but it raises two questions for me:

- Can a Pie/Murton platoon produce suitably for right field?

- Damon was the designated hitter in 47 games in 2007 and if I'm not mistaken, he's had recurring foot/leg injuries over the past few seasons. Do we want that in center field and inevitably have to defer to Pagan/Fuld/both Pie and Murt in the lineup in the same day when/if those injures recur?

Damon's also questionable and continually declining in the outfield. I don't hate this idea, but it would worry me if it got done. I'm still solidly in the Fukudome camp.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post brings up the possiblility of a Damon/Cubs trade:

Chicago considers Fukudome a five-tool asset capable of playing any outfield position. There have been comparisons to Hideki Matsui, but the Cubs feel Fukudome has less power than Matsui, but is a superior runner and thrower. If the Cubs fail on Fukudome, they could become interested in Johnny Damon, though Damon certainly does not have the arm to play right field.

I don't see any value to the Cubs in bringing in Johnny Damon. He's in his mid 30's coming off a very weak year. He's consistently hurt, and a question mark on defense. I'm not sure what he has left, but I doubt it's enough to really help the Cubs. He's just going to keep needing to sit out more and more games, and without the DH, there's no place to hide him.

This is a bad way to get out of Marquis's contract, in my opinion.

Agreed. The 3-way deal where we end up with Randy Winn is better, IMO.

Oh God, Damon would be horrible.

Proven Winner. ;)

--- But what I also found interesting is that hendry actually tried to trade for Adam. I wondered what players he offered.

"The Cubs have prioritized finding a lefty-hitting right fielder. The free-agent market is not appealing to them (Geoff Jenkins and Brad Wilkerson) and their attempts to land Cincinnati's Adam Dunn in a deal fizzled. So they are focused on Japanese free agent Kosuke Fukudome, who has not even said officially he will come to the States".

Based on the rumors from yesterday, I think we could pull off a blockbuster with the O's.

Prior and Demp to Tx for Laird.

Murton for Teahen

Marshall for Hamilton

Laird, Teahen, Hamilton, Marmol, Theriot, Gallagher for Miggy, Bedard, and Roberts.

Marquis and Veal for Ibanez.

I's can deal Hernandez and Mora like they want to. They get a catcher, CF, 3B, closer, and SS. All young, cheap, and good (except for Theriot).

So dumping Dempster's 5m will all of a sudden afford the Cubs Miguel Tejada, Brian Roberts, Raul Ibanez and a soon to be very expensive Erik Bedard?

The Cubs decided to go big on Ramirez, Lee, Soriano and Zambrano. In doing so, they've made it pretty necessary to go cheap at many positions. There is no way the Cubs could afford to go big at every position unless they completely blew the budget out of the water.

Unfrozen caveman beat reporter? Celebrity gossip columnist?

So, if I understand this correctly, Hendry will be going head to head with the New York Post for Damon's services?

To be fair, he's dealing away Dempster's money along with Marquis's. After those moves, the Cubs could probably afford bringing in what those guys will cost.

Whoops. I guess I did miss Marquis. But, I tend to skim over anything Marquis anyway. It's my way of pretending like he was never a Cub.

Also getting rid of Prior. Its just as feasible as Matsui and Fukudome.
