The Washington Post reports that Erik Bedard has informed the Orioles he has no interest in signing an extension to stay in Baltimore.

It's hard to blame Bedard for not wanting to commit to an organization that's been run so poorly for so long, though there is the potential for things to turn around now with Andy MacPhail in control. If Bedard is taking this kind of stance, the Orioles might as well trade him now. The Mets and Dodgers have engaged in serious talks with the club, and the loser of the Johan Santana sweepstakes also figures to get involved.

Hendry should definetley go after him..give them some of our young guys..Z,Bedard,Lilly,and Hill would be nice..

I would trade Hill for Bedard. I'd try and make a package to trade for Tejada and Bedard, sign Fukudome and call it a offseason. Never happen, I know, but hey, I can dream.

I'm fairly certain MacPhail will keep them wildly pathetic .

As disappointing as the final results were, he did lead the Cubs into respectability. He failed miserably in fixing the Jim Hendry problem, and allowed the Dusty Baker era to happen when it never should have. But after arriving in the early 90's, when the team was an absolute disaster, he got the team back to respectability by 98, and from that point forward they were a .500 or better team in 5 of 10 years. Something to be proud of? No. Something to be satisfied with? No. But nonetheless, it was better than wildly pathetic, which is what Baltimore has been for the past 10 years. He's probably a pretty good leader to stabilize a dysfuntional organization and lead it back into the right direction. He's probably not the right guy to then lead a team to the next step of greatness.

There was "plenty" of pathetic to go around during McPhails tenure here..

1997 67 wins

2000 65 wins

2002 67 wins

2006 67 wins

During this time period the Cubs failed to produce any signicant position players from their minor league system, and were never a player any major FA. The only large contract was the Sosa extension. MacPhail refused to authorize $$$ to fix the minor league shortcomings. His tenure was nothing short of a disgrace.

WFAN radio in New York reports that "there's news floating around that the Mets are close on Erik Bedard."

The Bedard rumors have picked up steam since he reportedly told the Orioles that he's not interested in working out a long-term contract extension. There's some speculation that the Orioles could ask the Mets to take Miguel Tejada and his contract back in a Bedard trade, but it's unclear where Tejada would play in New York. It remains to be seen if the Mets have the pieces to pull off a trade for Bedard even after dealing Lastings Milledge.

So, the O's will do a Marlin and dump Tejada and his salary on whomever can get Bedard? If Tejada is being considered a payroll dump to the O's I'd hope Hendry is already on the phone.

Bruce said that from what he's heard Tejada's contract is too much for us (unless we don't make any other big moves i'm assuming), so unless Baltimore is going to eat some we shouldn't get our hopes up.

Cubs could spin him off.

Bruce has said Tejada's contract is too big and the O's aren't willing to pick up a huge chunk of it.

UPDATE, 12-4-07 at 3:10pm: Nick Cafardo notes that Cubs GM Jim Hendry and Andy MacPhail had lunch today, which leads him to believe they may have discussed Bedard. A bit of a stretch since Hendry and MacPhail used to work together. Then again the Cubs did pursue in a Mark Prior/Miguel Tejada deal a few years back. The Cubs would represent the 11th team in on Bedard.

I don't buy it.

Bedard, Tejada, Markakis. If they talked about any of those 3, then good. Otherwise I hope Jim was just hungry like always.

Roberts wouldn't be a bad guy to pick up.

But if the Cubs were to swing a deal that landed Josh Hamilton, they could afford Tejada. If they can afford Fukudome, they can afford Tejada.

I heard that Pacman was their host since he knew all the hotspots in the area.

Hence why I said "If we don't make any other big moves". Signing Fukudome is going to be probably at 11 million, which is a pretty big move (money wise). I'm trying to say they can't afford both Fukudome(or another expensive RF) and Tejada, which is what i'm sure is what Bruce was implying as well.

I wouldn't mind Roberts either, I just prefer to keep Derosa at 2b

If the Cubs could swing a Roberts trade and sign Fukedome I think this would make a pretty decent lineup. It frees DeRosa up to play 2B, 3B and RF. The only weak spot would be SS and possibly Pie if he struggles.
