Ken Rosenthal"]Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts remains a much higher priority for the Cubs than Red Sox center fielder Coco Crisp. Trading for both would result in too large a payroll increase, even if the Cubs found a taker for right-hander Jason Marquis. Roberts and Crisp will earn a combined $24.8 million over the next two seasons, or $8.55 million more than Marquis.

The Cubs' minor leaguers begin playing games on Friday, and the Orioles want time to see them before reviving the Roberts talks.

That's been my thoughts for awhile. The Os aren't in any hurry and neither are the Cubs. The Os want to see what's doing with the minor leaguers.

We can argue about giving up our 3 top pitching prospects for Roberts, but that won't upset me half as much as giving up any pitching in this deal:

Cubs Still Talking To Rangers About Byrd

MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan writes today that the Cubs' talks for Marlon Byrd still have some life. Not much has changed - the Cubs would give up Matt Murton, but the Rangers want young pitching.

Agreed. Texas is not in any position to ask for more than said players (Byrd) is worth. IDK if I would trade Murton straight up for Bryd, much less add anything of value to get essentially a 4th OFer.

Contrary to Gordon Wittmeyerr, or whatever his name is at the Suntimes, but the Cubs have NOT included Jose Ceda in trade discussion.

Maybe this Brian Roberts deal is more annoying then a day time soap.

And you know this how?

Is this MLB Trade Rumors Report your source?

Yes.

Simply because I don't trust any word made by a Suntimes columnist. And....I simply refuse to believe Hendry would part with THREE more young pitchers in one trade.

Bleed Cubbie Blue also reports that its sources debunked the SunTimes report of Ceda's current inclusion in a Roberts deal.

Finally, in answer to any further questions about The Trade That Shall Not Be Named, I have had further confirmation from sources besides Deep Goat, that what appeared in the Sun-Times this morning is absolute nonsense. Absolutely nothing is happening on the trade front right now.

Well they're also debunking the entire trade.

The only people who know whats actually happening are Jim Hendry and Andy MacPhail.

Wouldn't suprise me if neither of those two even know where they are from moment to moment.

Pretty sure Angelos has no clue to what is going on, but he hasn't had a clue in over 10 years.

I'm always amazed how someone this clueless had success in business.

For what it's worth:

I can't find a podcast of this, but last night on "Orioles Hot Stove" (MASN), the two hosts mentioned to guest Buck Martinez that "several scouts" from teams, including the Orioles, are questioning the work ethic and current mindset of Ronny Cedeno during Spring Training. Martinez poo-pooed it and the discussion went no further than mentioning that Cedeno would be coming over in the rumored deal for Roberts, and that Cedeno would become the Orioles' 2B or SS.

It was a very strange 60 seconds of cable TV, but I wonder if anyone else has heard the current rumors concerning Cedeno?

Isn't before Opening Day included in any time?

Dave van Dyck"]Sources continue to insist nothing is imminent on the trade front involving Brian Roberts, but that it could happen at any time or it could happen right before Opening Day

I've heard nothing of this, but I've always thought Ronny was an underachiever.

No one believes the SunTimes Ceda report...

Pulp fiction: Some Cubs people were angered Friday to read a report saying pitching prospect Jose Ceda had joined pitchers Sean Gallagher and Donnie Veal and infielder Ronny Cedeno in a proposed deal to Baltimore for Brian Roberts. More than one Cubs person said no such deal is on the table.

Since i am to lazy to go back and read the past several pages in this thread. Can someone get me up to date on whats happenning? PLEASE!!!

OK, I'm done littering the page with Seinfeld-esque stories about nothing... after this post.

Peter Schmuck at the Baltimore Sun"]There have been no significant developments over the past week or two, and the time left for getting the deal done during spring training is growing short. The Orioles aren't fettered by any hard-and-fast limits on when they can act, but you can bet both teams would like to reach some semblance of roster certainty over the next 10 days.

Does that mean a deal is imminent? No. It probably means that if the Cubs do not show a sense of urgency during the next week or so, this could stretch well into the season and the chemistry of the situation could change dramatically -- which might not be a bad thing.

Ugh, I haven't opened this thread for the past hundred pages or so but this whole thing is so stupid. If I were Hendry, I would have offered no more than Patterson and Marshall. Fits both sides: Marshall jumps right into the rotation and Patterson is a promising young player that can replace Roberts. Angelos/MacPhail are being ridiculous demanding four players.

Roberts is a good player and all, but certainly not worth our top three pitching prospects. Just let DeRosa have the job he was promised and end this whole fiasco.

You have to think if you are the Orioles. Why would they trade Roberts for a downgrade at the position in addition to yet another back end guy for their rotation that would probably get shelled in their division?

While I'm not agreeing that Marshall and Patterson is enough for Roberts, the Orioles are going no place for the next 2-3 years with or without Roberts. Marshall would certainly step into their rotation

(#3-#5) and Patterson would probably start at 2B for them. Both of these guys would play and be under their control for quite a few years. Add that to the fact you save $12 million over the next two years on Roberts' contract and you might make a decent point.
