We have elite prospects?

We're very likely to have two prospects in the top 30 in baseball this year.

Just curious, who?

I'd guess Vitters and Colvin.

I don't think Colvin makes many top 30s.

LOL You can tell who the pessimists are when the outrageously wrong/lopsided rumors come out (i.e. the ones Hendry floats so that the actual trade doesn't look so bad) and they start freaking out.

I will say it right now, there is absolutely no chance that Hill gets traded in a deal for Roberts. The only way something like that would have an iota of a chance of happening would be if it were a package Roberts/Bedard deal.

I know I might be being generous here, but there is no GM that inept.

I've been tending to some family-illness issues, but here are a few thoughts some info on what I've been told:

First, Hendry doesn't "float" rumors and neither does MacPhail. I can see MacPhail hating how this is playing out, and I'm sure he'll put it on his to-do list to stop leaks like this.

Second, the Orioles might be asking for Hill and Pie and whomever, but they will not get them. Hendry absolutely will not trade them for Roberts. Period. A package that includes parts of Gallagher, Marshall and/or Cedeno is what the Cubs have in mind.

Third, from what I've been told today and earlier this week, nothing is imminent. The Cubs would like Roberts, but if the O's decide to move him, it's 50-50 the Cubs will get him.

Fourth, the writer Peter Schmuck was mentioned above. This guy is good. He's a former Orioles beat writer who is very plugged in there. If he says it's 70 percent Roberts won't be moved, I'd tend to go with that. But that doesn't mean things won't change.

Fifth, I'm told MacPhail's first order of business will be trade Bedard (no, the Cubs are not in on this). Once that get settled, then he'll turn his attention to Roberts.

Thanks Bruce! Any ideas on what their plan is if Marquis and/or Dempster "crap the bed" so to speak?

I hop all is well with your family.

I think it's all pretty wide open with the final spots in the rotation. I'm sure Hendry wouldn't mind trading Marquis if he could find a taker. There's always a chance Dempster could end up back in the bullpen depending on how Lou likes or doesn't like what he sees in spring training.

Thanks for stopping in despite the family illness issues. Hope that gets better.

Vitters and....

Do Pie or Fukudome count?

Soto?

Well, here's the BA Top 10:

1. Josh Vitters, 3b

2. Geovany Soto, c/1b

3. Tyler Colvin, of

4. Jose Ceda, rhp

5. Sean Gallagher, rhp

6. Donald Veal, lhp

7. Josh Donaldson, c

8. Jeff Samardzija, rhp

9. Tony Thomas, 2b

10. Kevin Hart, rhp

So I'd guess Vitters and Soto.

Fukudome would be #1 if he had made BA's handbook in time. Fukudome and Vitters are probable top-30 prospects according to BA.

Not sure if Tim was referring to Fukudome or Soto/Colvin (I think Soto should be around 50 and Colvin 75 myself).

Bruce are we free to use your information to update the fans on the Orioles Hangout forum or do you prefer to keep the information on this site only? The reason I ask is because several of their posters claim to have inside information from the Orioles that claim that this deal is 100% done, and I wanted to see what they thought about your insight.

As everyone else said, I hope all is well with your family.

Bruce, if you're still hanging around I'm curious as to if the Cubs are looking at anyone besides Roberts that you know of. Thanks.

I don't know if I should even bother, but I'll pass this on for the people that just like to have fun with this stuff, like me.

Disclaimer - This is from the guy, Joey, who claims to have his own Cubs insiders and is a Cubs fan that just signed up on their board. In other words, I wouldn't call him nearly as credible as the others. He just signed up on that forum this month. This is not one of the infamous "O's insiders."

My guy says that Pie, Hill, and Colvin will not be traded for Roberts, and that report was false. And if that were to happen, Hendry would just walk away.

Still, I'm hearing this is done.

Also adds...

But the Cubs fan side of me is very annoyed about how long this is taking.

I don't think we will see Fukudome and Roberts back-to-back in the lineup. Nor, do I think you will see Lee, Ramirez and Soriano in a row. If that's indeed the case, there's only 2 possibilities for me (assuming Roberts):.... or

Soriano, Roberts, Lee, Ramirez, Fukudome, Soto, Pie, Theriot

Basically depends on how much of the spotlight you want on Fukudome. But the 2nd lineup does have 3 players in a row with less than a 1/2 season of ABs between them.

That's the lineup I'd expect. Keeps Fuku from getting inordinate spotlight. Separates righties. Keeps the top speed guys on top, as Lou likes. Keeps a lot of power 3-6. Doesn't mess with Soriano, Lee, or Ramirez.

Reports: Roberts Traded to Cubs

By: Tony Pente 1/9/2008

Orioleshangout.com has learned through several sources that the trade of All-Star second baseman Brian Roberts to the Cubs has been finalized.

The early reports indicate that Orioles will get back 22-year old right-hander pitching prospect Sean Gallagher, 25-year old left-handed starting pitcher Sean Marshall, and 24-year old shortstop Ronny Cedeno.

Update: An Orioles official has contacted the Hangout and denied this report and said "it is completely inaccurate."

More to come as it develops.....

Who knows what "done" means to these people.

Maybe this deal has been completed but the O's want to trade Bedard first then figure out their 40 man situation:

Rosenthal

Bedard: A trade between the Orioles and Mariners is only one player away from completion, major-league sources say, but that one player could be right-hander Chris Tillman, a 19-year-old that the M's would prefer to retain.

Outfielder Adam Jones would be the centerpiece of the deal for the Orioles, and left-handed reliever George Sherrill and 17-year-old shortstop Carlos Triunfel are among the other players under discussion.

The Mariners also have inquired about A's right-hander Joe Blanton, but the A's would insist upon Jones and the Mariners might not be willing to trade their top position prospect within the division.

They do like Jon Lieber. They feel he can pitch well in Wrigley Field. Such a move, of course, would no doubt lead to further moves with a crowded rotation.

That's along the lines of what I was thinkin. Have you spoken to your guy since this morning, BTW?
