From Rosenthal:

The Cincinnati Reds, moving toward the first big acquisition of the Dusty Baker era, are in serious talks with free-agent closer Francisco Cordero, major-league sources say.

Cordero is still talking to three clubs, but it is believed that the Reds have emerged as the front-runner over the Brewers and an unidentified third team.

The Brewers, who are on the verge of losing setup man Scott Linebrink to the White Sox, offered Cordero a four-year, $42 million contract, sources say.

Cordero, 32, would fill a major void for the Reds, who last season converted only 54.8 percent of their save opportunities, the lowest percentage in the National League.

By signing Cordero, the Reds could shift right-hander David Weathers back to a setup role. Weathers, 38, performed admirably as a fill-in closer last season, converting 33 of 39 save chances.

Cordero was 44-for-51 for the Brewers while going 0-4 with a 2.98 ERA and striking out 86 in 63 1/3 innings. He made the All-Star team for the second time in his career.

F-Cord's got some great numbers, but 4/42 seems downright batty for any relief pitcher. Oh I'd sure like it the Brewers invested a fortune in a 32 year-old who starts declining sooner than thought...

4 years for 42 million is crazy. I really want to see the Brewers sign him for that much.

Wonder why the NL Central is so horrible? Just look at the GMs fighting between and driving up the prices of Cordero and Matsui.

Rosenthal says it's a done deal:

The Cincinnati Reds, making their first big acquisition of the Dusty Baker era, have reached a preliminary agreement with free-agent closer Francisco Cordero on a four-year, $46-million contract, major-league sources say.

The deal, which is pending a physical, includes a club option for a fifth year that can bring the total value of the package to $57 million.

Wow, that's a stupid contract.

The only time a team can validate overpaying for a closer is when that is likely the missing piece. Obviously, the Reds have some holes especially the btm half of the rotation (minus Bailey, Harang, and Arroyo). They need a front end starter and have the bats to acquire one via trade since none are avail. via FA. A closer becomes less valuable on a team that several holes, smaller payroll, and 2 starters and other parts of the pen not likely to be considered shut-down anytime soon.

lol @ Cubs fans talking about bad contracts.

Why? Because they Cubs didn't get him?

Yes, I've never seen any criticism here on any of the Cubs contracts. Like most here, I'm extremely upset the Cubs didn't go 5/60. :)

It's a bad deal. Everyone on here hated the Eyre and Howry deals. A middle reliever should not be getting a contract that big.

It's baseball.

Show me a contract handed out in the free agent market that isn't bad. The Reds just signed the best pitcher off the market, and it fills a huge hole. The Reds can line up the bullpen with Burton, Weathers, and Cordero at the back end.

Now, trade one of our extra outfielders for a decent starter and you are looking at a contender in the central next year.

Cordero is a middle reliever?

If the Cubs had signed him for that deal, this board would have melted down with the people who hated the deal. Many people on this board don't like committing a decent percentage of the payroll to the bullpen to the first place. They also don't like multi-year deals for relievers. They also don't like signing guys in their 30's to long-term contracts. Finally, many think the position of closer is overrated to begin with. Cordero fits under all of the above, and while he'll likely be pretty productive he's not productive enough to be that big of a percentage of the Reds overall payroll.

What? You are talking about a team that was 29th in baseball in blown saves last year.

Part of me can see why Reds fans are excited, this is the first time in a long, long time that they have paid big money for a so called "premier" FA. Cordero will help them, but will he be worth the contract? So, bad contract or not, the Reds fans are excited to see themselves as players in the market. Although I think the money could be better spent elsewhere.

Cordero was absolutely awful outside of Miller Park last year, which is probably a fluke because its not like Miller Park is a pitcher's paradise.

I go to several Cincy games a year, despite the crap I get for my Cubs allegiences. I am constantly harassed by suppoerting a "loser", yet you have to look very hard to see a team that has competed less than the Reds have the past 7 or 8 years.

Can someone find a FA closer deal that people didn't hate before it was over? Paying 11+ million for a closer is lunacy, doing it for a nearly 33 year old for 4 years is how you get people to claim you have a reliever fetish.

The difference is, Cordero isn't trash. The reason we've had to get so many relievers is because they all suck.

A blown save can occur pretty much anytime a starter leaves the ballgame. Most are not necessarilly even the fault of the "closer."
