I'm about ready to look at some players that could be obtained at a lower cost for RF. I would think a trade for Josh Hamilton or Luke Scott (to platoon with Murton) would be very affordable (in players and money). In addition to one of these players, signing Milton Bradley would give the Cubs lots of versatility and some bats off the bench. That would leave lots of money and tradeable parts to go after an expensive SS (Tejada, Furcal, Young).

no way bradley is ready until June, right? Torn ACL AND MCL.

Torn ACL and meniscus. I don't know medicine, but I don't believe the meniscus is the same thing as the MCL.

Last word on rotoworld was that he probably wouldn't be back by ST...and its not a torn MCL and a torn meniscus. And he had elbow surgery to remove loose bodies.

Personally, I love to have loose bodies floating around me.

The meniscus is just cartilage, though it's fairly important. Tearing that would cause your joint to lock up and making running fairly painful. The MCL is the medial collateral ligament, one of four ligaments (including the ACL-- anterior cruciate ligament) responsible for stablizing the knee. Injuring those is what causes the sensation of giving out, as well as causing pain.

My original post was to get Hamilton or Scott (let me add Church) to complement Murton and/or Pie and then add Bradley. Bradley being available later might work to our advantage. The Cubs could see if Pie is able to hit at the major league level and, if not, pick up Bradley for less money (half a season). If he really struggles in the first half, a player like Hamilton or Church can help out in CF.

I think you might be selling Hamilton short a bit. Assuming he's healthy and clean, he's gonna be a monster. I doubt the Reds would hand him over to the Cubs without being blown away. (Think Hill +)

Scott is totally available, though, and suits that role perfectly. If we don't get the eff you Japanese dude I'd prefer Scott by a large margin over Geonkins.

Another vote for Luke Scott. Considering the (low) price, he'd make a ton of sense-

1) He's a left-handed hitter, for which Jim Hendry has a hard-on for some inexplicable reason. So there's that.

2) Even as a lefty, he hits both LH and RH-pitching equally well; .856 OPS vs. righties, .850 OPS vs. lefties.

3) He's not only NOT a product of the juicebox; he's FAR better on the road than at home. Last year he put up a .993 OPS away from MinuteMaid.

4) He's got decent patience AND decent power, two things we're still sorely lacking. Last year his IsoD was .96, and he has a career SLG% of .516.

5) He's younger than both Fukudome and Jenkins.

He's certainly not the 'star' bat we're all ideally hoping for, but IMO we could a lot worse (for a lot more money) than Luke Scott.

I have seen rumors that Hamilton might be traded because they have a glut of outfielders, but I don't know what the cost might be. Another very interesting name might be Seth Smith from the Rockies. Right now he's pretty much 3rd string in their OF, but he would certainly be what the doctor ordered as a young, cheap, left-handed, power hitting corner OF. I think they could use a 2B and pitching. Start with an offer of Theriot/Cedeno/Infante (their choice) or Ohman. Perhaps both? Either way the players mentioned are spare parts.

My love of Milton Bradley has been well documented. Luke Scott's a good option. I like him a lot. I also like Church. Carlos Quentin could be very interesting. Seth Smith is definitely interesting. I certainly wouldn't be opposed to going after a SS (Tejada) and going w/ one or 2 of these cheap options in the OF.

Hendry could trade Matsui to Colorado for Smith after he gets him signed.

Zero chance. You're forgetting about the no-trade clause Hendry will give him.

We could trade Matsui plus a backup 2b for Smith and still have four 2B left.

Hey that's great, we give the Reds Josh Hamilton for nothing (this has been argued, and I don't care - GMs should not be in the business of doing favors for divisional rivals) and now we can trade a fortune to acquire him. This sounds like the workings of a competent organization.

No one's talked about him since the trading deadline, but I would put my money on Griffey being the cubs starting RF next year.

I would have a hard time believing that, considering the injury he suffered to end the year. Those tend to linger. But it would be funny if the field rehab was a way to entice him to come here.

I'll put up $1000 at 5:1 odds against.

I don't remember where I read it a few weeks ago, but I read something about Griffey will finish his career in Cincinnati. Actually, I always thought getting Griffey would be a great fit, but something would have to be worked out on all of that deferred money.

The White Sox cut ties with injured leadoff hitter Scott Podsednik by designating him for assignment Tuesday.

The move comes as little surprise as the Sox sought an upgrade. Podsednik, one of the heroes of the 2005 World Championship season who was eligible for arbitration, is now a free agent.

The move was made to make room for shortstop Orlando Cabrera on the 40-man roster. The Sox added pitchers Jack Egbert, Adam Russell and Lucas Harrell and catcher Cole Armstrong to the 40-man roster, which is now full.

Only thing Bradly would be good for is watching him and Lou get into it.

True, but what about Bradley?

Yes, you should definitely comment on other people's spelling.
