Can someone answer this question:

I thought that HGH was undetectable? If so, what steroid test could Bonds have failed?

Bonds hasn't failed any steroid tests that I know of. This indictment is about his testimony before the grand jury. The Feds know when they raided BALCO that Bonds was on steroids because of all of the data they found there. Plus, there is plenty of corroborating evidence. Bonds says he didn't knowingly take any which seems to be a lie. Bonds was given immunity from prosecution after the testimony, except if he would up committing perjury. Bonds is not in trouble for taking them, but for saying that he didn't take them when he knew he did.

HGH wasn't the only steroid Bonds was on. He was on anabolic steroids (see the wiki page on "Game of Shadows") previous to HGH. HGH is not undetectable. It's just that blood test used to detect is is not allowed by the MLB for a number of reasons and the test is not as accurate as the MLB would like.

According to the indictment Bonds failed a steroids test.

From the ESPN article

The item that jumped from the 10-page indictment was the revelation of "positive tests for the presence of steroids and other performance-enhancing substances by Bonds and other professional athletes." The positive tests stem from work-ups performed on Bonds' blood and urine samples through BALCO,

So not a baseball test.

I usually don't watch the crap on ESPN, but they had it on at the place I had lunch at today. The headline on the TV was "Was race a factor?" or something like that. Stephen Smith and whoever else is on that show were discussing it. It really pisses me off that race is being talked about here.

Yeah, I heard a minute or two of that. They were wondering why every player busted for steroids weren't being prosecuted. They brought up Mcgwire as a counterexample. I wanted to scream at them that steroids weren't the reason that Bonds is being prosecuted, it's that he lied about using them to a grand jury. Mcgwire never did that, nor did pretty much everybody on the Mitchell list (another thing they brought up wondering if the feds are going to go after all of them too). It was a really, really poor argument, actually worse than ESPN usually is.

Was Palmeiro under oath when he denied using steroids? Then of course month later he got caught.

I'm not sure if they were under oath or not. I'm guessing there's some sort of requirement to tell the truth in that matter. But the issue with Palmeiro is he got caught after saying he didn't. The bust was not evidence that he was using before the testimony. The Bonds situation is quite different.

Palmiero can't be charged because he failed the test after he testified. But I wonder if it can be figured out that Palmiero had to be on them for a few weeks prior for it to show up on a later test.

So I guess Bonds did fail a test associated with the criminal investigation. I wonder what they found.

I have to remind myself that HGH while illegal to take now, is not tested for. Bonds can't get busted for taking that. When were anabolic steroids made illegal in the MLB? He could have taken anabolic steroids up until they were illegal and then taken HGH after that. So Bonds could have taken this stuff, but worked it out so that he can't be punished. If he is found guilty for perjury, I don't know if they can take his records away because what he did was not illegal per se from the MLB's perspective.

It really pisses me off when Stephen A. Smith talks.

Sorry if this is a repost but I was a little surprised by this quote from the new ESPN.com front page article:

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3113231

MLB officials told ESPN's investigative unit that they think Bonds' career is over and they won't even bother to suspend him.

Sounds like he fully Vick'd himself.

Bonds is a vicktim of his own success.

I can't hear you, can you step closer to the mike?

pretty off-topic here, but did anyone see that story espn ran about the two colleges in delaware (i think) that never play each other in football? one school was predominantly white (so they say...i saw lots of black guys when they showed footage of the team) and one school was 100% black.

anyway, the white team wouldn't schedule the black team in football, and espn did this whole story about it, heavily implying that it was based on race, which made no sense. the white team played the black team in like 15 other sports each year. some AD or something from the white team was like "we can't fit them into our schedule until 2015," and some guy from the black team was like "if they want to play us, they should make it happen," or some such ridiculous thing, as if the white team could just change their agreements with other schools just so everyone wouldn't think they weren't racist.

i kept waiting for some hammer to drop about how the AD at the white school was a klan member or something, but they had nothing of the sort. then the story was over, and they completely painted the white school like they were a bunch of racists or something because they didn't want to play this other team from their state. it was crazy.

if it was delaware then it was probably University of Delaware and Delaware State. I dated a girl who went to UD and it seemed like the school was probably pretty similar to Penn State, maybe 90% white. I know that DSU is also mostly black. But I have no idea why Delaware doesn't want to schedule Delaware State... they generally play a pretty tough (for i-aa) schedule and faced (and beat) navy this year. Delaware State, I think, usually sucks. But regardless of that, I don't the UD should have to schedule DSU just because they're in the same state.

It's amazing that people cannot grasp the concept of lying to a grand jury as being a crime in and of itself. Why can no one seemingly understand this?

yeah, that's the dumbest reasoning ever to schedule someone. does PSU play Penn? no. Does Illinois play DePaul in basketball? No.

So not a baseball test.

I also thought that the prosecutors got the supposedly anonymous tests from 2003 that caused the first iteration of the steroid testing program.

HGH is not a steroid and is only able to be detected (for now) in tests on blood. MLB only does urine tests. There are urine tests for HGH in the works

It annoys me when people talk about how Clinton was impeached for getting a bj. He was impeached for lying under oath! I'm not defending or complaining about anything beyond that or making any political statements, but that much annoys me.

ESPN absolutely adores making things about race. There's a time and a place for everything, and sports is not an area where I particularly want to watch "social justice" stories, especially when they are created from scratch like this one.
