btw - I don't mind Hendry saying that CF will be considered a defensive position if they're going to play Pie out there this season. In fact, I really like him saying that. It both lowers fan expectations (no booing if Pie doesn't hit .300 and 25 hr, please) and takes the pressure off Pie to perform instantly in the majors.

What should he say? "We expect Pie to carry the team next year. We feel that if he doesn't win the MVP fans should be disappointed."

I think I prefer his actual approach to the situation better.

Well no, I don't expect him to say that either. That would be a little extreme.

I didn't think lowering fan expectations is a good thing. Are you saying it's good for Hendry to head off the booing because we're sure to suck? Why are we apparently not considering real improvements at the position?

Maybe Jim should just come clean and tell us he can't get any money for improvements right now, so he'll do the best he can but don't expect too much in '08. That's the underlying message I'm getting, wouldn't you agree that's the way it's shaping up?

Maybe Jim should be creative and when making a salary dump actually DUMP THE GD SALARY. If Hendry is forced to go into next year with the same payroll or only a minor bump, he coudl still improve the team by dumping off some salary, restructuring a couple contracts and trading for Tejada. But no, we're fine with Omar Infante, and the comfort in knowing that we made Jacque Jones happy.

Why are they not considering real improvements for the position? Because they seem to be actually willing to stick with a prospect for once even knowing he's going to struggle for a while. I think that's a good thing. Pie's going to stick in CF next year, and Hendry is telling us that he doesn't have to produce offensively for a while in order to keep his job. That allows Pie to relax and to develop into the type of prospect he can be without worrying about his job security;

I personally don't mind handing CF to Pie and setting appropriate expectations for what he will do in 2008.

I would upgrade the team at RF and SS and let Pie play. But that's me.

Agreed. ARod at SS, Fukudome in RF and Pie in CF. Nice offseason!

Fukudome

DeRosa

Lee

ARod

Ramirez

Soriano

Pie

Soto

A bench of anyone, anyone, who cares and everyone else and this team is a lock down to make the playoffs.

Mark Cuban happily purchases the Cubs.

It's great in theory, but when push comes to shove, it'll be interesting to see what they actually do. Without any real improvement at SS, and RF unlikely to be significantly better than it was last year, I wonder how long they will actually tolerate substandard production out of CF. It's easy to live with an all glove prospect when the rest of the lineup is clicking. The problem is the Cubs lineup is unlikely to click.

Hendry's words in November about CF being about defense aren't going to placate rabid fans in May if Pie is hitting .250 and the team is getting beat because they still can't score enough runs.

Every day is something new.

Jones for Infante

Veal to the bullpen

Cedeno to the outfield

it is readily appearent that Hendry incapable of thinking strategically. He has no plan and is making things up as he goes along. Meph is right, one has to really try to be this bad.

None of those are exactly new though. Jones has had 1 foot out the door for a whole year now. Veal possibly going to the bullpen has been around for several months, and Cedeno was practicing in the OF during spring training. It's not like these are huge surprises. All of them have been hinted at or publicly stated for a long time now. The plan is almost certainly flawed, but there has been a consistent plan with each of those moves.

If it takes Veal 120 pitches to get through 5 innings, maybe the pen is the best place for him. I'm not a fan of the move because I think he's better served starting this coming season but it's better than Cedeno to the OF.

But hey, if making Ronny more versatile means keeping him in Chicago and giving him a fair chance at the SS job, then I'm all for it (that is, if SS will be manned by one of Cedeno, Infante or Theriot; if Tejada or someone else is here next season, I don't care).

I really have a hard time seeing how having him learn the OF will increase the odds they give him a fair chance at SS.

What I meant was that to get a fair chance in March, he'd need to still be in the organization and his "versatility" might help keep him in the org. If his competition is Infante and Theriot, I think he'll get a fair chance in ST.

everybody should play every position.

rotate every inning

Can we have someone dressed up as the Mad Hatter to announce this every inning?

You could do this in every game too!

Maybe Hendry should just make it up as he goes along then. His plan sucks.

But by no means is it an announcement, just speculation.
