I haven't seen this posted anywhere, or mentioned in the Winter League thread, but Hendry is now mentioning Cedeno as a possiblity for the outfield.

There's a new candidate for the Cubs' 2008 outfield derby and his name is … Ronny Cedeno.

"We have asked Ronny Cedeno in winter ball to be prepared to try to play the outfield," said Hendry, who noted that Iowa Cubs manager Buddy Bailey has been working with Cedeno on his outfield skills.

What a joke. Please...no...

This exact same thing was reported last year as well in the spring about both Theriot and Cedeno. Neither of them played a significant amount of time in the OF when the season started.

If this would relax him as a hitter and he could hit 300/350 and play CF I'd be all for it. I just see him as a weak hitting 250/290 guy that might be able to play a decent OF. I also think it may depend on who the Cubs have in the OF. I don't see them taking Pie or Soriano out for defensive purposes. I think this might add some value to Cedeno and if it stops Hendry from spending a goofy amount of cash for an equal thing to Cedeno I'd be fine with it.

How bad is Ward out there...in right say? Maybe move Ward/Murton to left and Soriano to right, wold the combo of Ward/Murton give the Cubs a productive left or right field?

Ward would be one of the worst defensive OF's in LF, but no worse than some of the other butchers out there. At the same time, I don't know if he'd hold up with a whole season of playing the OF at this point of his career.

i guess i don't see how having him work on learning a new position would help him relax as a hitter.

What I'm saying is that he may be more comfortable in the OF. I'm not saying he will be and I've seen players relax and be more productive when they don't have the pressure of being a middle infielder any more.

Seriously, the words that are coming from Hendry lately are truly frightening. I know it's early, but is he consciously making an effort to destroy our season in '08?

Once again, can the Tribune sell the team already? This crap is getting ridiculous.

Just leave the kid at SS. His bat isn't going to get better just because you put him in CF. How many crappy "versatile" guys do we need on this team. If you're not going to use Cedeno at SS, then trade him to a team that will.

Between this, moving Dempster to the starting rotation in November (a move that just screams "we will do nothing to improve the rotation"), and then announcing that Pie/Fuld will be CF and the position will be viewed as a "defense" position (something where I thought maybe the Cubs might, you know, still want to develop Pie as a hitter a little bit??).

I mean come on. Is anybody watching this stuff? This guy is resigning us to the tank in '08.

Ronny has played like 2 inning of CF in Venezuela so far.

it would be different if there were a far superior player blocking Cedeno at SS (i.e. not Theriot). i just don't get this move with the current personnel.

"versatility" is the new "guys who can catch the ball". problem is, we've already tried this too (Neifi, Macias, Bynum, etc.).

Yeah? Well you might just change your tune if you saw how incredible his "D" was for those 2 long innings, Mister.

Going through the logs, he caught the only ball hit at him during those 2 innings.

Also, he went 4/5 with a HBP, double and a home run that day. Maybe Hendry and Cuse know what's up.

btw - I don't mind Hendry saying that CF will be considered a defensive position if they're going to play Pie out there this season. In fact, I really like him saying that. It both lowers fan expectations (no booing if Pie doesn't hit .300 and 25 hr, please) and takes the pressure off Pie to perform instantly in the majors.

What should he say? "We expect Pie to carry the team next year. We feel that if he doesn't win the MVP fans should be disappointed."

I think I prefer his actual approach to the situation better.

Well no, I don't expect him to say that either. That would be a little extreme.

I didn't think lowering fan expectations is a good thing. Are you saying it's good for Hendry to head off the booing because we're sure to suck? Why are we apparently not considering real improvements at the position?

Maybe Jim should just come clean and tell us he can't get any money for improvements right now, so he'll do the best he can but don't expect too much in '08. That's the underlying message I'm getting, wouldn't you agree that's the way it's shaping up?
