Cubs biggest need is in the PEN!!
Ha-ha; thanks for the laugh. (Insert missing ROFL smiley here.)

No Problem! But I didn't say the ONLY problem.

Their pen is at the bottom of their problems. It can all be done in house no moves need to be made except re-signing Wood.

Really? Other than Marmol and Wood, who do you trust? Maybe Howry. Dumpster is better as a starter just to get him out of the closer role. Neal cotts excites you? Lou obviously hates Scott Eyre.

Howry

Marmol

Wood--if they resign him

Wuertz

Thats 3 currently, and possibly 4 very very solid relievers.

Who is the closer? Is Marmol ready? Wood?

And I am not sold on Wuertz.

I worried about the pen last year and many times I wasn't disappointed.

Any of them can close. The Cubs had an above average pen last year, I don't know what you are talking about.

Not sold on Wuertz? How's 3 straight seasons of sub-4.00 ERA sound?

I read that Winn is terrible but I don't see it in the stats. What am I missing? Why is this a bad deal? Just for Pie's playing time? If the team were still playing right now Pie wouldn't be playing either

I really don't think Winn is a bad player. I just think he's overpaid.

The guy said "maybe Howry", what more do you need to know? Howry was lights out last year, how can somebody say, "maybe Howry"

Yes, I said Maybe Howry. I think Howry is a good releiver, but he has 7 losses last year, 38 for his career. That is the only knock I see on him. I don't understand how his 12 losses in 2 years as a Cub makes him LIGHTS OUT.

Wins and Losses are a terrible, terrible metric for evaluating a pitcher.

W-L is a horrible, horrible way to evaluate a pitcher.

Jesus people. I am not using W-L to evaluate him. I was using the losses to defend my MAYBE. I know releivers are more than Losses, but he has a lot.

Why dont you look his other stats, and they will show your maybe, is not at all. Howry is good plain and simple. The bullpen is not a problem at all.

No you didn't, but you did say it's the BIGGEST problem, when in fact it isn't even remotely close to being a problem at all.

Player A- .300 .353 .445 16m over the next two years

Player B- .281 .352 .438 less than 2m over the next two years

Who would you rather have? Besides the fact Player A is ridiculously paid, you'd have to trade something to get him. Player B? Matt Murton is already on the roster.

Guys available via free agency that would be better options than Winn are Jose Guillen, Milton Bradley and obviously Fukudome. All three have the potential to be cheaper than Winn as well. Or, just play Matt Murton.

The Cubs bullpen is not a problem. They'll be fine with what they have.

The Cubs had the best pitching staff in the NL last year. Well, according to the stats, the Padres did. But, move the Padres pitching staff into Wrigley and against the NL Central and they finish with a higher ERA.

Posted
the cubs pitching is gonna be in a free fall next year though. we shouldn't compare them to what they did in 2007, we should look at what theyre gonna do in 2008

But the fall is going to come more in the rotation than the in the pen.

The Winn hate is over his horrible contract. Obviously, trading Marquis' (literally) equally horrible contract negates this. Other than his age, I don't really understand the objections to the deal. Much better than breakeven for the Cubs.

I find it quite ridiculous to suggest the Cubs have a bullpen problem. The bullpen since the beginning of June was a strength. There's just not a rational argument to suggest otherwise.

We could use some upgrades to the rotation, but the primary places the Cubs need to improve are at RF/CF/C/SS. Catcher should be better with Soto, so that means the Cubs need to look at the other three and maybe help for the rotation.

Posted

Wins are a horrendous way to measure a bullpen as they have everything to do with the team scoring late inning runs.

Losses for a bullpen wouldn't be my first choice for measuring a pen, but they do give you some relevant information that shouldn't be dismissed out of hand.

Catcher/ Short/ and CF can be addressed in system if the young players are give a decent shot and time to adjust. Each player needs a month or so not looking over thier shoulder to truely evaluate them. RF is an easy fix, outfielders are available, some with good bats. The offense is respectable. That is why I consider the biggest need bullpen.

Relievers are not easy to find. There were many games that I felt uncomfortable in late innings knowing what was coming. While Marmol was phenominal, will he be the same or will teams adjust? Can Wood stay healthy? He sure hasn't to this point. So, in my humble opinion, the pen is the biggest need because it is the hardest to fill, not that they were not good last year.

Spending money to sign or quality players to trade in order to get back bullpen pitchers is the most inefficient use of resources.

The bullpen won't be a problem.

Even with Marmol as closer and Howry in set-up, the back-end is likely as good as most in baseball. If Wood returns, he'll add to a dominant back-end. Any number of the guys on the farm could probably step in if necessary.

I think we could much more adequately fill the bullpen internally than we could those other spots, outside of catcher.

The bullpen wasn't a weakness last season and there has been almost no reason to believe that changes in 2008. CF/RF/SS were weaknesses in 2007 and I don't think what's internal is enough to make me believe those won't be problems in 2008. Bullpen is not the area that needs to be addressed.

Wow, Pie in center isn't enough for you? I can see Cedeno at short not being perfect, but he could be part of a package to bring in a RF.
