In the latest issue of Sports Illustrated, they have an article called "Fire Up The Hot Stove." In it, they go over several trade proposals for this winter. One of them would have us trading Murton and Gallagher to Cleveland for Jhonny Peralta.

So what does NSBB think?

I'm not sure Cleveland would need another outfielder. But, if they do I'd try to swap Gallagher out and someone like Marshall or Hart in. Then I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Man, that's a tough one. Probably a fair deal if Murton isn't gonna start and Gallagher stays blocked by a solid rotation. Peralta's last 3 years have been 1 great, 1 bad, and 1 decent. This past season was pretty much right down the middle of his good and bad years. Still a 100 point OPS increase over Theriot at SS.

I guess, I'd probably take the deal if the alternative for improving SS was to trade more than this to get Tejada and take on 10-12M more in salary. Peralta's number were pretty comparable to Tejada's in 2007 (Peralta showed more power), and actually his great 2005 year is pretty much in line with Tejada's prime years. Peralta's better defensively, and he's cheaper. Peralta's arbitration eligible, so will probably get about $3-4M compared to 13M+ for Tejada. Peralta allows you to still go out and add salary to get a legit RF.

I do it, I've always liked Gallagher and Murton, but this Cubs team is trying to win this year and Peralta likely contributes more to that than Murton in RF and Gallagher fighting for a rotation spot. Let's say the Cubs went after Shawn Green or Luke Scott in RF, you throw Peralta and Soto into that mix and the offense likely takes that next step and allows Pie to step into CF without creating too much of an offensive black-hole at the btm of the order.

I do have some concerns that Peralta will soon put himself in a position where he has to play 3B.

The beauty of internet speculations.

It's not often that Peralta is described as the better defender.

I'm kind of meh on it. I don't think Peralta's all that great, considering he's a pretty poor defender and likely only a slightly above average offensive player (I imagine that this year is the most representative year of what to expect from him, but who knows). Murton and Gallagher seem to be a lot to ask for a no-sure-thing, poor fielding shortstop. Then again, I don't think it would be a terrible deal - just not a particularly good one.

Before this year, PECOTA saw him settling in at a .280-.285 EqA for however long, apparently putting a lot of stock in his impressive age 22-23 seasons. That's about where Jeter and Guillen were this year offensively.

His UZR numbers aren't so hot, and were just brutal through the first half of this year however.

I'm all for moving Murton since he really doesn't have a future with the Cubs but we shouldn't waste one of our best trading chips for a marginal improvement, which is all Peralta would be. I'd rather package Murton with others for a player who will make a real impact.

I'm not all for moving Murton, as I'd much rather put him in RF and see what he could do, but I do agree that if we're going to trade him, it should be for a bigger improvement. I have to imagine some GM values Murton more than Hendry apparently does. I'm not sure that Baltimore for Tejada really matches up, but maybe there's a 3rd team that could put Murton in a corner OF spot and give Baltimore something that would net us Tejada (not that we'd only give up Murton, but that he'd be a key piece). Of course, if we trade Murton, we have to fill RF with something. And an OF of Soriano, Pie, and Jones doesn't look that appetizing to me.

I'd be ok w/ just adding Peralta, but not for Murton.

I'd rather have Murton in RF too, but there's not a chance in hell Lou actually wants Murton as his everyday RF, therefore I'll be disappointed if he isn't traded. He's worth more to the Cubs as trade bait than as a bench player.
