BTW, Lute Olson took a leave of absence from the Wildcats for personal reasons though the Arizona AD said it wasn't for health reasons.

Still recovering from '05.

Not too surprising, I think he got hacked too during that comeback.

Here's to 8 in a row!

Illinois looked like a defensive juggernaut last night. Even without Shaun Pruitt till the 2nd half the Illini only gave up 39 points total.

Isn't that what they are supposed to do against a DII team? I don't know how you can take anythign from a game against a DII team. I mean they are a DII team. Not saying U of I won't be good, but they were playing a DII team.

Exactly my point :D

I know. I was mocking you in return for you mocking me.

Illinois brought back it's whole team it should be good defensively. The better be good on D, because they can't score worth a crap.

Yea I was hoping you knew I was joking and not trying to be an ass. You are right, U of I will live and die with D, and they really need Pruit to be the talented big man that he is, and dominate. IF Brian Randle can tap into his potential on offense and stay healthy(big if I know) the Illini wont be too bad, and could give alot of teams fits. I dont look for anything spectacular from this season, but I dont think it will be a terrible season either.

I expect a fifth place* Big Ten finish and an NCAA tourney berth for the Illini. They'll be a tough out, too, because of good coaching, size and defense.

*Even with the move to 18 game conference schedules, schedule balance could move them up a spot or so (I doubt they're worse than fifth). I haven't looked at their schedule, so I don't really know. Maybe I should say I expect them to be the fifth best team in the Big Ten.

Illinois gets a rough schedule with Iowa and Northwestern as the teams they play only once.

The key to being a tourney team if you aren't a clear top 10-15 team is to be good enough to defend your home court. Illinois will be a tourney team, and I expect them to finish 4th and probably not lose more than 1 conference game at home.

And I will give you guys props, you will beat IU in Champaign. If IU could forfeit and not show to the game, that would probably work out best for the team and Mr. Gordon. I'd actually hate to see what would happen to him if IU won there and he had a good game.

That hurts their upward mobility. I think they can do better than fifth, but that makes a big difference -- Iowa and Northwestern figure to be the two worst teams and drop both games to most/all the better conference teams. Still, it wouldn't surprise me if they finish top-4 or even top-3.

Getting the worst 2 teams once apiece will certainly hurt in the Big 10 standings, but it should help in the RPI. Raw is right, take care of business at home, win the games against the dregs on the road and you've got 12 conference wins. 12-6 in conference even in a down Big 10 gets you dancing.

I'd be stunned if Illinois doesn't make the tournament.

Indiana only plays at Michigan and Purdue at home. IU and Purdue should play twice every year. I'm also disappointed in the lone game, as IU would stand an excellent shot of taking both from the Boilers.

DePaul opens up Friday at Creighton

And Depaul will get their first loss Friday. Creighton does not lose at home.

They do to SIU. I believe we've won our last 5 at Creighton.

I'm not that impressed with Mayo. I don't like his shot and at his size he better get one if he wants to make it in the NBA.

He's like 6'5 playing point guard and his offensive game is mostly oriented around getting to the basket, I think he'll be fine.

I'm not a Mayo fan by any means, but he's going to be really good.

Do you like Mayo or Rose better?

Mayo is obviously a better scorer, but I think Rose will without a doubt be a better player, at least in college.

I think Rose is a better player, doesn't hurt going to Memphis. They're loaded.

Same thing with Illinois/NU. I don't understand why they have protected games for football but not for the new basketball schedule.

Oh and Rose > Mayo

Rank Rose, mayo, beasley for me, for those of you who've been lucky enough to see them play. I'm hearing a lot of impressive stuff RE Beasley.

I take it you have Gordon behind those guys? Plus Love? Man this class is loaded.

I just don't see it. I think he'll be a good college player but I don't think he'll be any better than an average NBA player.

I think Mayo will be a better pro player than in college. I will admit though, I haven't seen that much of Rose. This will be a fun year for college basketball. Usually teams go deep in the tourney because of experience. This year, freshmen will make or break most of the top teams in the country.

I don't think Kansas or UNC will have many if any frosh playing serious minutes. I would also expect both to be around a lot longer than Gordon, Mayo, or Rose come tourny time. Kevin Love is the real key frosh.

They I think all the teams mentioned will be Elite 8 teams, probably along with G'town. But I will go out on a limb now and say neither Kansas or UNC will make the final 4.

that's a pretty big prediction at the start of a season. so much can happen. kudos if you're right though

From what I've seen (granted I haven't seen much of Gordon), Rose seems to be clearly the best of all the freshmen.

I can't wait to watch Love in action, everyone who's seen him has come away so impressed. Today is UCLA's season opener - sadly it's not on TV. :(
