CM is happy with Theriot's production at SS next year

I do know Rodriguez played shortstop -- despite what some e-mailers may think -- but I don't think shortstop is the "biggest hole" the Cubs have. Ryan Theriot may never hit 50 homers or drive in 150 runs, but he's solid offensively and defensively

Not surprising at all. I'm sure she thinks he's a nice, cute little southern guy and doesn't really care that his numbers suck.

god, i thought that CM stood for cubs management.

Carrie Muskat = Cubs Management

Agreed, I'm glad I wasn't the only one that thought the first post was a bit ironic

EDIT: I also purposely made the subject of the thread ambiguous, assuming people would ignore any thread with the words "Carrie Muskat" in it.

CM not good at job

I don't understand most of the criticism she takes. She works for the Cubs. Do you really expect her to write, "Theriot is a below average hitter who had one good month, so if the Cubs don't get A-Rod than the team is in trouble?"

She is not in the position that someone like Bruce is in. As much as anything or anyone else on cubs.com, she has to help that team sell tickets and make money. Everything she writes, like everything on cubs.com will have a positive spin. This is no different than any other team website. Get over it, and get your thoughtful cubs writing from Bruce, the only Cubs writer in town with a clue.

I stand by my original stance on Theriot. Hes good enough that theres no need to search for a replacement, but if the opportunity for something better comes along via trade, IE Tejada or Renteria to go for it.

theriot is good enough at ss if we improve a lot at rf and cf.

I started the thread because it seemed she went a little beyond the plausible deniability logic that you used above. Everyone knows she can't stay stuff like "Murton should start in RF every day" which directly criticize management, but I see no reason to post an email calling Theriot a hole and then make a point of refuting the guy's assessment of him. She made it a personal case and advertised her high opinion of a guy who really is a hole in the lineup.

It seemed like she crossed the line from safe journalism to bad journalism.

Right. But she said nothing about that, which was my real problem with the article.

In theory, Murton in RF instead of Cliff and Pie 2008 instead of Pie/Pagan/Jones 2007 SHOULD be a big improvement, but I have little confidence that a) the Cubs will be smart enough to do it and b) that Murton and Pie will be what they should be just because we're the Cubs.

That's not her job. She's not a journalist, she's a PR puppet. It's no different on any other team website, anywhere.

Exactly. A ton of the stuff she puts out there is completely ridiculous, but it's difficult to actually gauge her knowledge of the sport since everything she writes has to be pro-Cubs and pro-organization. I doubt she's some kind of baseball svengali, but this job really doesn't give any chance to actually offer her own opinion if it views parts of this team in a critical light. Hell, last year, Izturius was "just fine" at SS. A walrus plugged into that spot would be "just fine" from her job's standpoint.

C.M. Newton (former college basketball coach and Kentucky Athletic Director) is who came to my mind.
