LOL, Steinbrenner is a [expletive]. If it wasn't for Torre the Yanks wouldn't even be sniffing the playoffs this year. Look at what he did completely overhauling that pitching staff mid-stream.

Cashman had more to with that than Torre.

Not surprised his job is on the line again though, if they get swept it would make it the 2nd year in a row they were outed in the first round.

Steinbrenner has his hand in the cookie jar, too much. If they allocated more into scouting and player development rather than bloated contracts on declining players, they prob. would have some more rings this decade.

I heard this was a joint decision.

Sadly, they're getting back into player development (by throwing money at it).

I heard Ditka say this morning that regardless of what happens Torre should say "screw you" to Steinbrenner and leave.

I almost have a mind to agree with him. I have no idea why Torre would care to put up with George's ridiculous pressure tactics at this point in his career. But hey what do I know.

I do know if Torre was fired he'd have job offers from every team with a managerial opening before his feet hit the pavement.

I assume the Lou to NY rumors will commense immediately upon Torre's departure.

Meh. Let him go. I wouldn't be bothered by it if he wasn't back next year. He was a step above Dusty, but wasn't that great IMO.

If I was Torre, I'd walk right now.

i could go either way on that. i thought Lou was fine (slightly better than I expected). it really just depends on who they would bring in to replace him. that's what i would be afraid of more than losing Lou. probably Girardi, which I wouldn't really be a fan of.

Well, in Girardi's defense he had those youngsters playing better than they did this year. They couldn't wait to get rid of him -- for what, so they could post a 70-win season and sink to Expos-type-lows in attendance?

I don't think Girardi's that bad. I find it more likely the Marlins are just a junky organization.

Lou can stay here and save Zambrano for 2009 for all I care if that means it brings A-Rod to Chicago.

I assume the A-Rod to the Cubs rumors will start.

Lou will not go to NY and manage and if Torre is fired A-Rod may reconsider his options. I know I wouldn't want to play for Joe Rah' Rah' Girardi who's likely next in line.

My guess is Girardi will be the next manager of the Yankees....unless they can find a way to raise Billy Martin from the grave.

What about Mattingly? I think its Girardis job as well. but hasnt Mattinglys name been out there too?

Yeah, I think that's the direction they are going to go as well.

well anyone hoping for A-Rod to Chicago shouldn't wish for Lou to go to NY, as the main reason A-Rod wants to come here (theoretically) is to reunite with Uncle Lou

NY Daily News[/url]"]That's the easy part for Steinbrenner, who clearly has been poised to end the Torre era, which has produced 12 straight postseason appearances, four world championships and six American League pennants in 12 seasons. The hard part for Steinbrenner has been finding a suitable replacement to fill the huge shoes of a manager who has become a Yankee icon. But it may not be so hard after all.

Tony La Russa, the third-winningest manager in baseball history, is a free agent waiting by the phone in California and I believe Steinbrenner soon will be reaching out to him. Why do I believe this? Because Steinbrenner knows he can't replace a manager with Torre's Hall of Fame pedigree with Don Mattingly, a Yankee icon in his own right but one who has never managed a game. It wouldn't be fair to Mattingly and it would be tough sell to hardcore Yankees fans.

La Russa, on the other hand, is someone Steinbrenner knows well and someone who has a Hall of Fame managing cachet of his own. The 63-year-old Tampa product has been named Manager of the Year four times and has won two world championships, 11 division titles and five pennants with the Oakland A's and St. Louis Cardinals. But what makes La Russa even more attractive to Steinbrenner and his advisers is his longtime pitching coach, Dave Duncan, the father of Yankee outfielder Shelley, is regarded as the best in the game. With the heavy emphasis on the Yankees' young pitching next year, Duncan is viewed as an equally important acquisition as La Russa.

Like Torre, La Russa's contract just expired with the Cardinals, and while Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt has stated publicly he wants him to return, the firing of GM Walt Jocketty last week placed further strains on La Russa's relationship with the organization. Would La Russa, who has managed in small markets most of his career and is known to have had a prickly relationship with the St. Louis media, want to come to New York and manage in the pressure-cooker atmosphere that is the Yankees?

My sources tell me he absolutely would.
