Guys, I just want to say that I really believe that all of us will see a World Series one day -- I think it will be sooner rather than later. And when we do, all of this pain and longsuffering will be swept away by the joy of a world championship.

I know all of us are disappointed. I think we all knew deep in our hearts that this was an average or slightly above average baseball team. I guess I'd rather go out this way than for another 2003 finish. But one of these days, we are gonna win, and win big. With each year that goes by without a championship, ownership (whoever they may be) will be under more and more pressure to get it done. I like Lou Piniella and I believe he knows what pieces we need to get it done, and now he has some pull with new ownership to get those pieces.

Thanks to NSBB for a great forum for all of us to voice our opinions, excitement, and disappointment.

Ken (now and always a Cubs fan)

i'm not as depressed as i was in '03. the cubs have some good, young talent coming from the minors who will make an impact next year. soto, pie, hill, marmol...good guys to cheer for. the cubs really do need a GM who values the power of a walk and a hitter who can take pitches. it'll be interesting to see what happens at the GM position during the off-season. hendry was signed for one season, correct?

Ken,

You say pain before joy.

Just how much pain are we talking about?

Isn't 100 years of pain enough?

Though, I started watching the Cubs around 1971, it wasn't really until 1984 that my pain started. So for me, it's only been 23 years. I do really feel bad for those who are in their 70's and 80's who have been waiting much longer than me.

But trust me, one day it will happen, and when it does, we will all be in tears.

I'm done for the year. Fried out. I might be around during FA, but for now, I just need to break this addiction. I need to get away from baseball for awhile.

See everyone later. I wish you all the best.

U too, man. You'll be back, as Cubs fans always do.

I think I need to go away for a while too, but I'll probably be back tomorrow.

Random.

I wish I could take a couple months off and not think about this team. But I can't.

2003 was more painful, but there was also more reason for optimism. This year to me is not a success, because even with the playoff appearance the Cubs are still behind where they were in 2003. Four years and not even back to the level they were, let alone making progress above that, is inexcusable.

I'd say the season as a whole was a success. Lou spoke about changing the culture here. Well, they made the post season and I think that's a quality first step. Yes, they laid an egg once there but they have started the foundation and have a direction.

It is absolutely key that they make the playoffs next season. I think that will go extremely far as to changing the culture. Maybe then the players can stop feeling content making an October appearance and grab for the bigger prize.

I agree with what you are saying, but I also think that they are only one position player away (allbeit a great one) from being where we want them to be.

Lou also has to warm up to moving Alfonso down in the lineup. He needs to be hitting 5th.

How is he supposed to know that?

I wish I heard back from Vance last night so I could have watched the drunkenness unfold.

I'm probably one of the few, but I'm not in pain at all. I didn't expect much from this team. I'm actually a little bit excited, knowing that the Cubs will be sold over the next 6 months and we'll be out of the Tribune's grasp. I figure 2008 might suck, but I'm looking forward to 2009.

The Cub pattern is clear, and has been unwavering since 1984: it says the year after we make the playoffs we will suffer a collapse and not return.

it's hard for me to have any kind of positive outlook at this point. the cubs actually got solid years from some guys that may not be capable of repeating their production next year. particularly guys like Lilly, Marquis, DeRosa and Jones (in the second half). i'd be surprised if Theriot improves too much in the off-season, though he may a little. the cubs don't seem content with Murton in RF, so i'd be surprised if he was a starter next year. not sure what to think about Pie and Soto.

the sale doesn't give me much optimism for the immediate future simply because i fear it will consume most if not all of the off-season and prevent the team from making the necessary upgrades (particularly either RF or SS) to get this team to the next level.

i'll allow that there are potential positives to consider, but it's difficult to do so right now.
