Matchups for Cubs pitchers (starters and relievers) look a lot better without Griffey, Dunn, and Hamilton. If only Hopper, Keppinger and Phillips would get hurt too.
I saw a post somewhere else on NSBB saying that Phillips is only expected to play one game in the series (either today or Sunday). I hope its true. I'll see if I can find it again.

As for Keppinger and Hopper, if someone can tell me where they live I can take some of my "associates" up and see to it that they are "otherwise detained" during the games.

Hopefully it becomes easier to deal with Keppinger and Hopper when you know you don't have Griffey & Dunn to deal with afterwards.

Every team has a couple good hitters anyway. Even the worst ones. There's really no excuse for not winning these ballgames.

Inconceivable!

Agree 100%. If Keppinger and Hopper can beat us then we never stood a chance.

How pathetic is it that WGN is only carrying one game in the final series, and they weren't even originally scheduled to carry that game?

Here's what I see: if we can't beat this group of highly-watered-down Reds with Z on the mound, and the Crew wins??

Oh boy -- you're gonna see this thing ignite on Saturday & Sunday like you can't believe. If you think the loss of confidence is pronounced now, wait until you see it after losing to a AAA team with your ace.

Great thread. Feeling the positivity.

I rationalized that the Cardinals backed in to the playoffs last year, as did Detroit, who got in as the Wild Card after blowing a huge division lead. Their post season turned out ok.

White Sox ended up backing in in 2005 too.

Of course I'll be plesantly surprised if the Cubs win more than 1 playoff game, but anything can happen as long as you get there.

And miss re-runs America' Funniest Home Videos? That's crazy talk...

CUBS CLINCH TONIGHT!

I LOVE the game thread, by the way. I'm so glad that Bhogg came out of retirement.

The only sad thing is that, if and when we clinch. we wont get to celebrate on the field.

Effing cubs. If you could have just won yesterday this game would be for the clinch..

I just realized that I will probably have to watch/listen to the Reds broadcast of the game. I used to love Thom B. when he was a Cubs announcer, but since he went to the Reds, he has acted like the Cubs shot his dog or something. He's almost Ron Santo-like in rooting against them.

Was he mad that Chip and Len were picked over him, or did he leave on bad terms?

They swept the final series in Cleveland though.

They won the last 5 games.

eff (Madison, WI): If the Cubs make the playoffs and if their bullpen pitches in the playoffs like it has these last two months, do you think they can score enough runs on a consistent basis in the playoffs to make a deep run? It seems the Cubbies are quite hot and cold with their run scoring production.

SportsNation Jayson Stark: (1:20 PM ET ) I can't figure the Cubs out. You look at the names in that lineup, and the versatility of that lineup, and I have no idea why they don't hit more home runs or get more hits with men in scoring position. Then again, Lou Piniella can't figure it out, either. I think that team has enough talent to win the World Series. But they're just not consistent enough to pick them to do that. And I've thought about it, too. Believe me.

I don't think I'll be able to stomach watching this from start to finish.

Maybe I'll come in halfway and see if its worth watching.

I haven't been able to watch a full game in weeks. My nerves and stomach can't take it. If it's worth watching I'll re-watch it. I keep flipping channels, pacing back and forth, kicking and punching walls, etc...

Would be awesome if we could win in extra innings or if the Brewers could play a really quick game so that we could celebrate on field if we clinch.

what kind of thinking is that? you really don't care about the cardiac health of Cubs fans do you.

would be awesome if the Cubs game took 4:05 because the Reds made 8 pitching changes while the Cubs scored a dozen and a half runs while the Brewers game takes 2:45 because Maddux got through 7 with 68 pitches.

NO excuse not to win this game tonight.

Go Cubs!

Um, these are the Cubs. So I wouldn't say there's no excuse. That said, it'd be great to have them clinch this thing tonight, and one would think there's a legitimate shot for them to.
