While randomly looking around on Baseball Reference, I came across Herb Washington's page. If you click that link, you'll see something pretty remarkable... Herb scored 33 runs over his two year career and not once did he step into the batter's box. Nor did he ever take the field. Pretty neat situation, just thought I'd share it.

LOL, nice.

29 of those in '74, BTW. He was the ultimate pinch runner that year. I wonder how many squeeze plays they had him run?

In the 74 WS they didnt have the desinated hitter they had a desinated runner though. I think Herb was the guy for the As
No, there wasn't a designated runner in baseball. It was just one of Charles Finley's gimmicks with the A's. He always had one player on the team who almost never hit and was used strictly as a pinch runner. First it was Allan Lewis for a few years, then Washington.

Sam Fuld anyone?

Adam Greenberg more likely.

And Adam Greenberg did step in the batter's box.

I saw Adam play about a month for the Wichita Wranglers. From his numbers it looked like he was having a tough year but man can he still move.
