Did I miss something, who said anything about racism? I didn't hear Bradley say anything about it.

Milton didn't but his first base coach said there were racial overtones:

Laura's link from the San Diego Union-Tribune[/url]"]Asked whether what Winters said had racial overtones, Meacham, who, like Bradley, is black, replied, “It smacked of that tone.”

I see.

Racial Slurs? Don't know where you got that? I just read two articles and it said noting about racial slurs.

Bradley said Winters called him “a (expletive) piece of (expletive).”

Asked whether what Winters said had racial overtones, Meacham, who, like Bradley, is black, replied, “It smacked of that tone.”

The reason it "smacked of racial overtones" is because the umpire escalated a dispute by calling Bradley an "effing piece of ," most likely in the most offensive and degrading tone he could muster, and calling him that in such a way is just as destructive and done with the exact same amount of douchebaggery as someone using a racial slur instead. It's only mildly less offensive than were he to use any particular trigger words, with the key difference being that the actual literal meaning of his words didn't cross over into ultra-taboo territory.

I agree with the coach for saying it smacked of racial overtones in that the spirit and situation were indeed very similar, and I would also like to echo the point someone made earlier that neither Meacham nor Bradley made any remark or any mention of anything race-related whatsoever until they were put on the spot. I think the correct point to take from such a remark is to regard the coach's impression of the umpire's actions to be in the same mean spirit and flame-fanning ignorance that people who routinely spew racist remarks also employ, as name-calling in such a way is as counter-productive and infuriating as it could possibly be.

Race should really not be an issue in this discussion. The unfortunate thing is, since the actual race line was not crossed, mlb will not feel pressured to investigate and properly discipline an umpire whose level of insulting unprofessionalism was equally as demeaning and insulting.

And something that happens thousands of miles away winds up hurting the Cubs.

Wonderful. That's just so typical.

I wouldn't call it hurting the Cubs. I would call the help to the Brewers in the season and the hurting of the Padres in the playoffs about equal as far as the Cubs are concerned.

The odds of the Padres and Cubs actually meeting in the playoffs are very slim for a whole shopping list of reasons.

This does hurt the Cubs, primarily because the Brewers have to now deal with a less potent offense.

And all of us white people that are supporting Barack Obama are only doing it because he's "acting like he's white" - at least according to the Reverend Jackson.

Jackson sharply criticized presidential hopeful and Illinois Sen. Barack Obama for “acting like he’s white” in what Jackson said has been a tepid response to six black juveniles’ arrest on attempted-murder charges in Jena, La. Jackson.

Can someone summarize why exactly the race issue is relevant to what happened?

Don't ask me. I see a guy that is a hothead and an ump that should be booted for taunting a player.

It isn't. Bradley never mentioned it. He said the ump called him a POS - not a nice term but one that historically has been uttered to people of all races.

The first base coach thought the ump's comments had "racial overtones" but he has never said specifically what was said or why he thought so.

Whenever a black and white person are involved in any incident someone will eventually brings up racism whether it is warranted or not.

Then I think the only question remaining is the most important one: Is there video footage anywhere of this injury??

I want to see the footage of the alleged bat flip.

Indeed. Recall when DLee got in the fight with Young. Half the people on here were saying that Young must have said something racist, which of course wasn't the case.

has there been any update on the condition of Cameron's hand?

I was watching the Padres game last night and he has his thumb in a splint. He had it looked at yesterday, but I don't remember what the actual diagnosis is.

What I do know is Cameron will miss the remainder of the regular season and it is still up in the air, but likely during the playoffs, when he'll be back.

There are two sides to every story. So far we've only heard one side. Before we convict the umpire, I'd like to hear his side of the story.

Jesse Jackson deserves to be kicked in the head by a horse. I can't think of many people who perpetuate racism more than him.

To get back on topic, here's a little sidenote from this article about the Padres:

The commissioner's office said it is investigating whether the volatile Bradley was baited by Winters. The Padres said Winters directed profanities at Bradley right before the blowup.

Good to see there is an investigation.

When it comes to how they call a game, I fully support the idea that whoever holds umpires accountable does it with no publicity, but if the claims against this ump and his baiting are true, I seriously hope they throw the book at him and make an example of him. Also, if it turns out Froemming knowingly covered for him, I'd like to see him get it too. I really hope mlb comes through on this one.

This has turned into the dumbest thread I've ever seen on this message board.

This thread might have gone dumb, but it's no where near the dumbest.

I don't know, I think your avatar might have pushed it over the edge,,,

As a former umpire I agree, normal umpire accountablity should be private. But in this case, if it is found to be true that he used profanity, the discipline should be publicized.

It will be interesting to find out what Todd Helton has to say.

It would seem the correct thing for Helton to hold his tongue until after the season, or at least until/unless the Rockies are mathmatically eliminated.
