Hawks look like a real team. This is awesome. At least the United Center won't be put to waste this year.

Hell I'm very tempted to make it out there.

That was one great game to watch.

I'm making sure I catch a game when I'm home for xmas. These guys are impressive. Lots of energy and they skate with confidence on seemingly every shift.

Hopefully they can have a solid road trip.

-scottie upshall is better than i thought he would be, and it's making one of my fantasy teams happy.

he's still getting limited TOI too (letting the wrist strengthen and getting back into game shape)

congrats to all the new hockey hall of famers, except for scott stevens, who can burn in hell.

ron francis has always been one of my favorite non-flyers... real classy guy, good leader. He has done some work with Special Olympics and been a big supporter of his brother, who I believe has Down's. He also did a lot for underprivileged youth in Pittsburgh and Carolina. One of the really good people anywhere, not just in hockey.

I don't really care about HOF type things, but man, the NHL really blew it with this. There were some big names going in, and I didn't hear a thing about it until after it happened.

Are you a Blues fan or do you just hate Scott Stevens as a player?

I always thought he was one of those players that you hate unless he is on your team. I would have had him in a second on the Wings. He knocked Slava Kozlov out in Game 1 in the 95 finals. That hit pretty much propelled the Devils to a sweep. Clean hit too. Didnt he knock Lindos out a couple of time in the playoffs?

Posted

yeah he knocked lindros out in the 2000 eastern conference finals. Stevens' always seemed to be a player whose hits were technically legal, but you couldn't help but feel like he was trying to injure.

I'm in an interesting discussion on a hockey board about the decline in scoring this year (goals are down about 0.5 per game, and in nearly half the games you watch, at least one team will score one goal or fewer). I'm not sure what the solution is. I enjoy a 2-1 game that features scoring chances and great goaltending, but there are a friggin lot of 2-1 games that have a total of 35 shots, many from the perimeter.

I saw a 1986 game on the NHL network and the play was so much more open and exciting than today's game. Every team plays some sort of defensive system nowadays; if they don't, they'll get killed. The nets also looked much bigger back then because the goalies weren't wearing 100 lbs of equipment. Back then a guy could score an unscreened goal from more than 20 feet away without the immediate reaction of "oh jeez that was a softie."

I'm not sure if the league needs to put in place penalties for playing a zone/trap, or to expand the size of the nets to account for the larger gear (don't kid yourself - the NHLPA will never go for smaller goalie equipment, due to the fear of injuries), but I think there needs to be a change.

i've watched a couple of the 1986 games and thought they were pretty rough to watch. the game today isn't perfect but i like it more than what i saw on the NHL Network.

i think the dip in scoring is temporary, as well.

i'm not sure why you think it's rough to watch... defense wasn't as sophisticated back then, and teams sent in three forecheckers (my God, imagine that), but the games were just more exciting IMO.

If the dip in scoring wasn't accompanied by a dip in scoring chances, I wouldn't be so concerned. But I have seen some incredibly boring games with a solid 7 or 8 minutes between legitimate scoring chances.

I agree with Truffle on this. Games now have very long stretches of boring action. I dont think the answer is a larger goal. I very much can enjoy a 2-1 game with a lot of action. If the size of goal was increased we would still have long stretches of boring action with more goals but no more action. I think the 2 best solutions are to make the Ice surface larger and call interference. I know they have increased the interference calls the last couple of years. It still is no where near as open as it was in the 80s early 90s. They need to call interference when its interference. If someone doesnt have the puck you cannot limit his motion in anyway. That is interference.

Whats with the NHL schedule? Its only mid November and the Canucks have already had 5 breaks of at least 3 days or more. Hopefully they ditch this schedule and get rid of the 8 games against Division rivals too.

yeah the kings week long break pissed me off. i don't mind the "divisional month" thing though, but the heavy-divisional schedule needs to go. cut it down to 6 a year and get all of the teams to play in every arena.

and i just prefer a newer brand of hockey, that's all, i guess.

It's a travesty in how every team does not play each other when there is an 82 game schedule. That's my biggest gripe with the league right now. Please change this scheduling format.

I like the newer brand of hockey. Much more exciting to watch IMO.
