The Red Wings are a video game team right now. They outshot the Wild, a defensive-minded team, by a margin of 51-19. It seems like every game of theirs is like this.

I can't believe how long they have been able to do this. I love watching them play and I can't wait for ESPN to get hockey back so I can see them more often.

Blackhawk hockey is back.

Just got back from the game, the crowd went nuts all game. We've finally got some skill and Buff is just a man-child. It was awesome seeing Wiz pound the heck out of that little punk Tootoo, too bad he got hurt. Crowd was going absolutely nuts and it was also great to see the team come to center ice an truly appreciate everyone. This is awesome. Couldn't come at a better time either.

I was at the game tonight as well, fun time, it's just great to see a big crowd and how much energy they had, and a good effort from the Hawks.

Unfortunately, Wisniewski is out four-to-six weeks with a knee injury, and Sopel is out two-to-four weeks with a broken finger.

Gonna be tough to replace those guys.

It's New Years Eve, and if the season ended today, the Blackhawks would be out of the playoffs. There are 8 teams in the west with more than their 41 points, although they have 4 and 2 games in hand over the 8th and 7th place teams, respectively. Then again, STL is only a point behind them and has a game on them as well.

They have scored the 4th most goals in the West and given up the 8th most. They've been a pretty good home team and a decent road team as well. I'd say they have as good a chance as anybody to sneak into the 7th or 8th spot in the playoffs. December was disappointing, in particular the 5 home losses. And now there is a string of 19 road games in 27 total contests before the leap day on February 29.

I wish I knew, and understood more about hockey than I do. I follow baseball, pro and college basketball and football, and the NFL. However, where Im from hockey is not even really thought about, so Ive never once watched a game from start to finish.

I would recommend going to a couple of Peoria Rivermen games. relatively cheap and a pretty high quality of hockey. Most hockey fans are very happy to explain the nuances of the game to newcomers. Thats if you live in Pekin. The Chicago Wolves would be better if that is an option. Same level and league as the Rivermen but a better following. It is a lot funner live than on TV and once you really understand the nuances I think its a pretty exciting sport. Much more action than in FB or Basketball.

Ive heard great things about Riverman games, but Ive just never made it over.

Rivermen play today, in fact - I think at 5pm. Between the Penguins / Sabres game, the Rose Bowl and the Rivermen game tonight, I'm really not going to want to go back to work tomorrow! With the AHL in town, though, Peoria hockey is quite good. I would not have recommended going when the ECHL was in town, but this game is considerably better.

The Pens-Sabres game is really something to watch.

Coming from an extemely casual hockey fan, that is quite an understatement. I've found myself watching this much more than the football games.

Snowing Outdoor Hockey is a beautiful thing.

While the announcers have expended every breath talking about Crosby, Evgeni Malkin is a fantastic player in his own right. It's a shame he's not on a team where he can be recognized as the true franchise player he is, instead of being so overshadowed.

I hate them almost as much as I hate how much the Blackhawks have sucked this decade. I Red Wings make me want to hate hockey.

Who was calling the game?

it was a great, great, great game to watch - NBC did a nice job broadcasting. My favorite part was Eddie Olczyk and Darren Pang making fun of Bob Costas hiding out and staying warm in his "hut". Now I can only hope that they use this to build a bigger audience for hockey. I was disappointed to see the 1st Saturday PM matchup on 1/20 - Bruins / Rangers. Whatever do you know...pretty sure at least 1/2 of all the games last year involved the Rangers. ugh. Can only hope we get some of the better younger teams (LA, Chicago, etc) highlighed occasionally. The Crosby love got a little old this afternoon, but I can understand why they did it. They did the same with Ryan Miller from Buffalo too - I was sorry to see Ryan lose, just because he played such a great game.

Anyway, my husband and I agreed that if they decided to do this at Soldier Field, we'd be in, but would try and avoid getting the sucky seats low down.

Emrick and more importantly Olczyk. He never coached Malkin so he didn't laud him as much.

sorry blackhawk fans

I guess I understand how Red Wings fans feel when they get owned by us. I don't know how the Kings always outplay us. Not a good start to the new year.

Mike Greenberg said it best this morning...this was a 3 hour commercial for the NHL. It was so much fun to watch. How lucky were they that it was snowing? That just made the game. The unfortunate thing is that it's the only outdoor game of the year. It's not exactly showing the real NHL product to the casual fan.

They need to play many more of these each year.

Probably the most watched regular season NHL game in a long time...if not ever.

It was wonderful to watch and it made me miss playing on the lake when I was a kid.

I think the novelty would wear off fairly quickly if they played many each year. Maybe it would work to go with 2-3 per season. I wouldn't expect this to work as well in places like NY though. I think the smaller regional draws are easier to pull off.

I really didn't like the look of Toews injury last night. I was watching the NHL Network and getting the Kings' feed, so they didn't pay attention, but Toews was going toward the net, and instead of going down like most people would do, he stayed on his feet but seemed to nail his knee on the post. Not sure if that was how the injury happened or if he tweaked something trying to stay on his feet. But when I saw him limping toward the bench I was not happy.

As desperate as the NHL is for attention though, I don't think it would hurt to try it out. Maybe each team playing an outdoor game each year? Then it wouldn't be a big deal that the games "count" since everyone is having to deal with it. Yeah, it's gimmicky, but so is interleague play or playing the NFL in London, or the NBA in Mexico. The NHL needs to do whatever gets them attention.
