I'll go ahead and add starting Trachsel tonight as well. Hill, please.

to expand on this , even though it has been already. does anyone think Lou has anything against Marshal? He definetly is at par with the others these days. He doen't even use him in long term relief.

Imo he's letting him rest his arm and since Hart has stepped up Marshall doesn't have to pitch long relief.

I'll let Phil Rogers do the talking:

He called it "a bad ballgame for us," and you would have to include Piniella among those who had bad nights.

He started Jason Kendall at catcher—announcing plans to play the veteran over rookie Geovany Soto in at least four of the last five games—and then watched him look woeful on a first-inning steal by Hanley Ramirez and go 0-for-4 at the plate. He let Marquis talk him out of pulling him when the score was tied 4-4 in the fifth.

Todd Linden had doubled with two outs and Piniella made that slow walk to the mound, seemingly set to lift the starter, who hadn't had a 1-2-3 inning all night. But Marquis convinced him he had enough left to get backup catcher Matt Treanor, and he didn't. Treanor lined a pitch into left field, scoring Linden with the go-ahead run.

If Lou really goes and starts Kendall the rest of the way (including if the Cubs make the playoffs) somebody should take a bat and hit him over the head. Hell, if CubmanPi drinks before a potential Game 4 like he did tonight, he might be drunk enough to do it.

If the Cubs don't make the playoffs by winning 1 out of 3 from the Marlins and 2 out of 3 from the Reds, it is not going to be based upon Kendall playing over Soto.

The Cubs could start me in CF the next 4 nights and it probably won't affect their record by more than a game. That doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Starting Trachsel

PH with Murton instead of Ward

Sticking with Trachsel

Bringing in Eyre

Playing Theriot

We just got Piniellaed.

You forgot putting Riot in the 2-hole, playing Monroe, and "getting Dempster some work in". Lou is doing all that he can do to blow this.

I just freaking love all this talk about how Lou hasn't taken anything for granted.

GEE, I COULDN'T TELL.

Man, I haven't been this angry in a long, long time.

Why did Fontenot PH instead of Ward in a one-run game.

I have no clue. That's what happens when you are en route to a historic collapse, I guess.

Lou left his brain in Chicago.

Erm. No comment.

Seriously. Lou was doing all the right things before this series. But all of a sudden he wants to start playing Kendall, batting the slumping Riot second, and start Trachsel?

Why go away from what was working so well?

He says he is playing to win every game, but his actions say otherwise.

Starting Trachsel today was an absolutely [expletive] decision. How can Lou seriously think that Trach would give us the best chance to win?

He couldn't have. He was thinking about the playoffs just like he said he wasn't.

More insane would be to start him if we make the playoffs

I don't think it was that. He had to start a 5th starter Thursday, Friday, or Saturday-that was certain. The coaching staff thinks that Hill is more effective when given more than normal rest, so the 5th starter spot was moved to Thursday. Then Lou had to decide who to start-Trachsel, Marshall, Hart, or Gallagher? That's where he messed up, not in thinking about the playoffs. He should have started Hart or Gallagher instead of Trachsel (I personally believe Marshall's arm is in bad shape right now).

Yeah, people have called for Marshall, but he's been as bad as Trachsel. I would have gone with Hill, or Hart at the very least.

You know, he's made some very poor decisions the past few days, but I'm still glad we have him instead of many others, especially Dusty Baker.

IF we still had Dusty there is no doubt in my mind that Izturis would have been batting second, Marmol would be in the minors, Jason Kendall would be batting 5th, Henry Blanco would be the first bat off the bench, and Will Ohman would be our star reliever.

nice job letting jock face the lefty rather than pinch hitting with kendall. yeah, i know kendall sucks, but jones is absolutely putrid against lefties, and with pinto throwing that big sweeping slider, jock might as well have been up there with a toothpick in his hands.

Starting Trachsel today rivals anything Dusty did. Absolutely awful, indefensible decision. I just really can't see how he can justify it. The only excuse is if he was joking about it and then someone else thought he was serious and put it him on the lineup card.

It was pure and simple, stupid.

Agreed. Lou had a bad three days (yes, I'm oversimplifying it as he's obviously made other mistakes this year) while Dusty was bad every single day.

Thank you. He was indeed.

As for the mope Trachsel - we hopefully saw an end to his storied and staggered career in Cub blue yesterday. More likely his last pitches in baseball. But don't worry Steve - your legacy will live on for the ages. We will win many a world series before another Cub pitcher chalks up 18 L's in a season. Farewell you puss armed malcontent.

Dusty never learned from his mistakes...he just kept making the same mistakes because he thought he was right, no matter the result. Lou, at least to me, seems willing to make a change when his decisions don't pan out. I can live with people that make mistakes...as long as they are willing to correct them, and Lou seems to be willing to do that.

Sometimes I wish his mistakes weren't so obvious though.

Trachsel has had a storied career with the Cubs. He was the guy who pitched the record-breaking ball to Big Mac. He was the guy who lost 18 games in a season.

He was also the guy on the mound when we beat the Gnats in that one-game playoff in '98. Pitched well that day, actually.

But adding him to this team, at this point in his career, was beyond stupid. Pitching him yesterday was unforgivably ridiculous.

Shame on you Lou. Quit channeling Dusty and start acting like who you really are, instead of reverting to a "grit & grind vets" freak.
