Joe Carter's RBI whoring lore overratedness has been well-documented. I'll point out another one and I expect to get slammed on this one: Manny Ramirez.

before i slam, what is the reasoning behind it?

his utter lack of defensive competence.

I don't think you can call him overrated though. He's been one of the top hitters in the league for a number of years now and while his defense is below average, everybody knows it. It's not like Jeter where most people perceive him to be a god defensively. People know Manny's shortcomings and deal with them.

Curt Schilling is pretty overrated. If he didn't force all of his opinions on everyone, he'd be a poor man's Jack Morris.

A poor man's Jack Morris? I can't agree with that at all. I'd take a healthy Schilling over Morris any day.

Schilling:

126 ERA+

1.14 WHIP

8.6 K/9

4.4 K/BB

.673 Opp OPS

Morris:

105 ERA+

1.30 WHIP

5.8 K/9

1.8 K/BB

.693 Opp OPS

It's one thing to say that Schilling is overrated at this stage of his career, which is probably true. However, when you look at his career as a whole, he's been a damn good pitcher, moreso than Morris.

How much does his defense really take away from what he does offensively?

quite a bit.

if Ortiz weren't on the Red Sox, Manny would never see the light of the outfield

by the way, a while back you had some numbers showing that zambrano's hitting made him better overall than hill. did those numbers take baserunning into account?

Great points. I probably should have said similar to Jack Morris. Most people, however, are considering Schilling a lock for the HOF while Morris hasn't sniffed induction.

I seem to remember reading about a significant Green Monster factor coming into play when rating Ramirez's defense via metric. He's bad out there, no doubt, but I don't believe he's as terrible as his reputation.

Yeah, I was going to mention this too.

How about Brian Downing (at least offensively)?

Career 122 OPS+. with a .370 OBP.

over-rated or under-rated? I always thought he was pretty under-rated.

I also agree with Steve Garvey. Probably the most over-rated player in the 70s.

Yeah, I was in the wrong thread. Meant to put that in underrated.
