Being late is a direct indicator of work ethic, particularly in baseball. Without knowing the circumstances, it's pretty obvious that the kid's head isn't where it needs to be, and I'd rather have a guy with less talent and more desire on the team 10 times out of 10.

Thats fine. My team full of talented jerks would win a lot more games, which is all I really care about.

Being late is not a direct indicator of work ethic, not even close. In a lot of jobs, those who like to show up early and leave late are often just butt kissers trying to make a good impression who aren't actually good workers. We've got a couple. And as you said, you don't know the circumstances. So quit pretending you know where his head is.

Taking less talent and more desire 10 times out of 10 is how you end up with a crappy baseball team, 10 times out of 10.

Being late is a direct indicator of work ethic, particularly in baseball. Without knowing the circumstances and assuming that Eric Patterson was just carelessly late, it's pretty obvious that the kid's head isn't where it needs to be , and I'd rather have a guy with less talent and more desire on the team 10 times out of 10. It's hard to imagine that the Cubs would punish him if there was a good excuse for the tardiness, so I believe the obvious is a fair assessment.

I revised my quote above.

I can pretend I know where his head is all I want. If a guy who is trying to break in to the major leagues doesn't get to the park on time, something is wrong. That is obvious.

It is also obvious that the organization felt the need to demote Eric Patterson, and the stated reason (by the media) is that he was sent down because he was late to work. It also is reported that this was a problem in Iowa.

When a doesn't get his ass to work on time, I'm sorry jersey, but again - it is obvious that he has a bad work ethic. You can't assume that because a guy gets to work early and leaves late that he is a kissass.

Sorry, but some things are just obvious. I'll be happy to eat crow if he proves otherwise, all I'm sayin is based on what info we have. Hopefully more encouraging news will surface.

Since I tend to look at the positive in all things, I'm going to just say it's good to see Eric showing a lot more patience than his brother.

=D>

You DO tend to look at the positive side of things, don't you? In fact, I'd say it's your unmitigated optimism that keeps me coming back to this board.

I wonder if he'll be called back up when Tennessee's playoff run ends (hopefully with the championship) if he shows he's learned his lesson.

How can this be defended?

If you can't get excited about being a member of the Chicago Cub baseball club, something is not right. If your JOB is playing baseball, and you are not HUNGRY enough to show up to work on time, something is wrong. I applaud the Cubs for sending Eric Patterson down. A guy doesn't deserve to be on the club if he can't show that he wants to be there - of all times, in the middle of a pennant race.

Dude needs to pull his head out. Quickly.

Assuming this is the case.

who is defending it?

A kid shows up late for practice or a game and he doesn't play...period. Hopefully this will wake up Patterson unless he had a real excuse for being late like finishing his degree at GT or a Dr. appointment.

I think he should have to give the $100 he got for being the NSBB Minor League Player of the Year last year back.

Because of something he did this year? In the majors?

He gave it to a charity to help the victims of Katrina.

Ignore it, it is stupid Desipio humor aimed at making fun of the board without anyone realizing it.

Then our only option is to get a mob together and rough up anyone that was helped by that donation.

Sarcasm tends to fly by people here with the speed of an Andre Ethier line drive.
Or it wasn't a very good joke.

I'm sure they get the joke elsewhere.

The most obvious response is still missing from this thread: someone just buy the poor kid a watch. :jocolor:

The Cubs did what they had to do. Now it's up to Eric Patterson to adjust.

I'm late into this thread (fnar, fnar) but I have no problem with the decision so long as it isn't something that isn't held against him longterm (assuming he doesn't keep showing up late).

Baseball related zings! Great work. This post is as great as a perfectly executed hit and run!

a hit and run with the bases loaded and nobody out, with the Penguins trailing the Jazz by 3 field goals and Zach Johnson at the reigns
