Yay now hes coming back on 3 days rest lol just ignorant

The ignorance of the people in charge of the Cubs is astounding. Other teams must laugh their butts off when they hear things like this.

WTH?

Can't be.

praise jesus that i didn't watch this trainwreck today

Same here. Going into the bottom of the second, I decided to spend the day skydiving instead, and it was still only 2-2 when I left, but I knew it would only get worse and I'm glad to have been away. I hope Sean Marshall gets to take his spot back now.

Marshall has never been there before, and hes never started a game in September. Plus hes not a gamer, or a winner, so Marshall needs to stay in the bullpen, so his little rookie head doesnt explode from the pressures of pitching in Sept.........

Love the fact that both zambrano and lilly will be going on 3 days rest so they can avoid pitching Marshall.

at this point, marshall's confidence is probably deep in the toilet, so might as well just send him down

Think he could make it in time for Tennessee's game tonight?

I can't even believe it.

They aren't going to avoid Marshall. Marshall is pitching against St. Louis this weekend. The rotation is going to be from Thursday through Wednesday:

Thursday: Trachsel

Friday: Zambrano

Saturday: Game 1: Lilly, Game 2: Marshall

Sunday: Marquis

Monday: Hill

Tuesday: Zambrano

Wednesday: Lilly

I guess if they pitched Marshall on Thursday and Trachsel on Saturday they could pitch Marshall again a week from Tuesday instead of Z. If you switch it that way though, Trachsel pitches against St. Louis instead of Marshall, and I'd rather have the Marshall start against the Cardinals.

I'm usually not big on the drawbacks of having similar pitchers in the rotation, but putting different looks in the rotation during a dh might not be a bad idea.

Trachsel is MacPhail's revenge on the Cubs.

Paul Sullivan??? :-k

Actually it was a Sullivan article from chicagosports.com that inspired that reference.
When former Cubs president and current Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail sent Steve Trachsel from Baltimore to the Cubs on Aug. 31, it may have been his final chance to seal his legacy with the organization.

And if Trachsel continues to pitch like he did Sunday in a 10-5 loss to Pittsburgh, the Cubs probably will be sitting home in October and the term "MacPhail's revenge" may grow in infamy.

Ok I just posted this in the transactions also but seriously, look at Marshalls numbers and explain to me why hes out of the rotation.

Over Marshalls last 10 starts hes given up more than 3 earned runs or less in 8 of those 10 starts, whats up and down about that? Hell in 18 starts this year hes given up 3 earned runs or less 4 times. In 13 of his 18 starts hes given up 2 earned runs or less, do I really need to keep going? The fact that hes been taken out of the rotation is a joke.

Look at Soto's numbers and explain to me why he's not the starting catcher, look at Murton's numbers and explain to me why Cliff Floyd is still getting a lot of playing time.... basically what it all comes down to is that the Cubs are incompetent, and while it's not as bad as during the Dusty era, the veteran fetish is still alive and well.

Exhibit B:

Extra bases: Geovany Soto could get more playing time. "It's tempting to put him in every day, but we've got an experienced guy," Piniella said of Kendall.

At least Lou's acknowledging Soto may be the better player. Dusty would have scoffed at the notion, and Geo would have been buried behind Kendall and Blanco.

Piniella is the white Dusty Baker.

He's clueless.

He's not nearly as clueless as Dusty.

agreed... if dusty were still managing, hill would likely have been lifted from the rotation by now; marmol would still be buried behind eyre, howry, dempster and probably ohman; Theriot would've never gotten the chance to start over Izturis. But yeah, it's pretty sad that Lou is saying "Soto seems like the better player, but Kendall has experience." Experience over home runs and a good arm... yay.

Most managers are going to be gunshy switching catchers in the middle of a playoff hunt, though. If they were each LF's, it would likely be different.

that's why soto should've been the catcher in july... but i digress

I'd of done it on June 21.

Lou could have made the catcher situation a lot simpler by not wasting plate appearances on stiffs like Koyie Hill and Rob Bowen, which might be the dumbest thing Lou has done all season. He could have requested that Soto be called up immediately after Barrett left. I doubt Hendry would have refused.

They've been in a playoff hunt for months and have switched catchers more frequently than any position on the team. Lou doesn't seem to have problems switching catchers, it's specifically switching out experience for quality that gives him the willies.

His over-enthusiastic usage of the sac bunt tonight seems to indicate otherwise.
