if any sportswriter does vote for him they should be fired immediately.

Umm, okay.

To answer the question, no, he won't get any votes. But we wouldn't be in first place without him.

there are like 12 guys on the team without whom the cubs wouldn't be in first place.

Marmol, Zambrano, Hill, Lilly, DLee, Ramirez, DeRosa, Theriot, Soriano... who else would you add to that list?

I hate Win Shares, but to make it simple I used them. Marmol is tied with Floyd and Dempster at 7 win shares. The players with more are Ramirez, Lee (1), Soriano (2), DeRosa (3), Zambrano (4), Theriot (5), Jones(6), Hill(7), Lilly(8), and Marquis(9). Marshall would probably be in front of him if he had been with the MLB club all year too, and Howry is right behind him. So, there's 12 guys you could make a case for.

An argument could be made that Marmol is the most valuable to the team for the time he's out there, but as a reliever his overall contribution simply can't compare to a starting pitcher or a positional player. http://www.hardballtimes.com has a Win Share "rate" stat that measures value per time, and Marmol does lead the team in that category (among players that actually logged significant time)

Also, I suppose if you wanted to look at it empirically (and really like Win Shares), 3 win shares = 1 win, so I suppose the Cubs wouldn't be in first place without any one of the players with at least 6 win shares. That includes Ramirez, Lee, Soriano, DeRosa, Zambrano, Theriot, Jones, Hill, Lilly, Marquis, Floyd, Marmol, Dempster, and Howry. Sounds about right.

As long as Aramis Ramirez is our most productive offensive player I will always consider him the the MVP. But really, there are a lot of guys on the Cubs that if you take them out this team isn't performing at this level.

FWIW, Beyond the Box Score identified Marmol as one of the best non-closer relievers in baseball this year.

46 games, 7 times he has given up runs

Wow.

Of course he's no league MVP, but he merits serious consideration for team MVP, IMO. I really like the way Lou uses him, he's put out a lot of fires. He's the difference between this team having a good bullpen or a shaky one.

Marmol isn't a Yankee or Red Sox so therefore he automatically gets 0 votes

the red sox have one mvp in the last 20 years. the yankees have one. the cubs have two. quit your whining.
