Rightly or wrongly (mostly wrongly) I think they are dead set that they need an experienced catcher behind the plate as we come down the stretch.

Once we acquired Kendall and it was clear that he would be the primary catcher, my hope is that they just felt long-term it would be better for Soto to play everyday at AAA instead of once a week in Chicago. If that's the case and they have big plans for him next year, I don't mind it so much.

Kepping in mind that this is really the first season where Soto showed this level of offense. Also keep in mind that the PCL is very much a hitters league this year.

It's not as if Soto is just having a good year in the PCL. He's pretty much the best hitter statistically in the PCL. The environment doesn't matter when you're #1.

Soto has never had the power as a hitter he's showing this year, but he's always put up respectable OBPs.

Has hill been claimed yet?

Just checking. :)

My local Independent League team (Joliet Jackhammers) could probably use him.

As a bullpen catcher.

Might as well release Cedeno -- he clearly has no future as a major league baseball player.

What a friggin waste of an asset that would be. Err, what SSR said.

Asset? What exactly does Cedeno bring to the table?

24 year old who has torn up AAA.

Could be valuable in a trade if we find a gullible GM...so basically if we try to make a trade with ourselves.

But has been nothing short of pathetic at the big league level. His career OPS+ is lower than Neifi's. That should tell you all you need to know about the guy.

He's played one full year in the majors. If he had been starting from day one this year, I think he'd be putting up respectable numbers

His line in his rookie year? .300/.356/.375/.731.

He's had 51 AB this year spread out all over the place, I'm sure he'll do better with more consistant playing time (especially when considering the improvements he's made in plate discipline at AAA this season).

Career OPS+, seriously?

Does that really bring value to the discussion? No one has argued that hes been great over the entirety of his major league career.

Interesting note...in Neifi's 24 yr old season, he had an 85 OPS+, his career high. The only other season he had an OPS+ over 70 was (you guessed it) 2005 with the cubs (77). If thats not an idictment as to how idiotic baseball GMs are, I don't know what is.

His 23-games of 137 OPS+ are what earned him that ridiculous contract. What a stint he had for us that year, though, starting with hits in each of his first 6 ABs... but this is really starting to derail the thread :)

Seriously? You're looking at his "rookie year?" All 80 at bats of it? Why that rather than the year in which he actually played a full season? You know, the year where he put up the .245/.271/.339/.610 line in 534 at bats.

And FYI, in '05 his 80 at bats were spread out over 5 months. This year his 50 at bats have been spread out over about 4.5 months. You're using his spread out at bats in '05 to show what he's capable of, yet his spread out at bats this year have hurt him. Huh?

The fact that he's put up stellar numbers in AAA two years in a row, was always young for his league coming up, and has always been a well-regarded prospect due to his athleticism and tools. I'm not saying he'd be setting the league on fire, but I think he's better than the line he put up last year

Yes, seriously. You want to release the guy because he "clearly has no future as a major league baseball player." He's had value in the past (his rookie season) and is still very young with a good skill set, I think that's good enough to show he does have a future in the big leagues (even if it's a utility player). I don't see how it's so clear that he has no future when he's had past success, even if it was only in 80 AB.

You don't think Cedeño would benefit from more regular playing time and would do better?

Why are his AAA #s completely meaningless to you, and I swear to God if I hear about G-D JASON F-N DUBOIS I'm going to strangle somebody.

This quote in the Suntimes made me laugh

• • Piniella said the Cubs are trying to trade catcher Koyie Hill, designated for assignment Monday, to a major-league contender.

Haha, nice move trying to dump him off on the Cards or Brewers

I was wondering about that quote, whether it indicated Hill didn't want to go back to the minors, and the Cubs are trying to accomodate him, or if the Cubs have no interest in keeping him around, given the relative depth of the position down there now.

Might as well send him to Oakland

No, I don't. I don't think Cedeno has a future as a major league baseball player. He has horrible pitch recognition, makes stupid mistakes on the basepaths, and isn't good on defense. I don't care if he's had success facing guys who will mostly never be MLB players, he hasn't done anything when he's been up in the big leagues.

baseball doesnt change between aaa and mlb. the idea of a aaaa player isnt a very good one.

The level of difficulty does though, and Cedeno isn't good enough to play at this level.

How is it possible to be so great on one level and then be not even worthy of a roster spot on the next level. It makes no sense.

There are plenty of example to prove it is possible.
