Oh well. At least they'll get some rest.... But I wonder how this will play out with the schedule. A DH is already scheduled with St. Louis in mid September due to Josh Hancock's death, and there will likely be 1, possibly 2 more games to play.

a rain out tonight would make Derwood a sad panda

I second that. But I'm wearing my Z shirt in bold defiance of mother nature.

I'm guessing you enjoyed SuperBad.

In August Kip Wells -- yes, Kip Wells -- is 2-0 with a 2.37 ERA.

I don't know where this has come from, but hopefully the Cubs can break it up tonight.

According to weather.com, it is apparently "t-storming" every hour of the day, even though it is not at the moment and hasn't been for a few hours. There is supposed to almost certainly be rain "tonight," but when exactly is "tonight?" Evening? Primetime? Overnight?

I want a game tonight but a day world benefit our pitching staff and Ram...

That weather report describes conditions here in Madison pretty well. It's overcast, and it seems every couple hours he lightning starts and we get rain for a little bit, then someone turns of the spicket for a couple hours.

One thing's for sure. Summer drought? Over.

Considering the off days remaining in the season, the Cubs need to play tonight. The pitching staff will be a lot more tired if they have to play a similar schedule like they did in 2004 at the end of the year.

Well if they don't play tonight when will they play? They already have one double-header from a rain out earlier in the season next time they play.

I imagine they will do everything they can to get the game in the next two days. St. Louis does not make any trips back to Chicago, so scheduling would be an issue.

Obviously you can't do much about the rain, but everything within their power will be done in order to play.

While they don't make any more trips, st. louis is not exactly far away either - not like its tampa visiting seattle. I agree they will hold out to play the games this weekend though. moving this game to sunday night will make that much tougher though.

They each have off-days on August 27th and Sept. 10th, which would be interesting to see how that plays out.

Not really. The pitchers don't need an off day, they just had one five days ago. Having tonight rained out would just eliminate one of our few remaining off days and change two stretches of 10 games in a row into one stretch of 21 days in a row. There are only two more days where both the Cubs and Cardinals are off on the same day giving only three options:

1) Doubleheader tomorrow which seems extremely unlikely given the forecast.

2) Make up the game Monday August 27th. Not ideal for us because it's the off day we would have after returning from a west coast road trip and before our final series with the Brewers the following day. It would also mean we would have another stretch of 21 days in a row without an off day.

3) Make up the game Monday September 10th between trips to PIT and HOU. It would create a stretch of 24 games in 23 days for us while eliminating the only off day the Cardinals have after Aug. 27th. It would be the absolute last option considered because it would make the Cards play 36 games in 35 days to end the year.

So basically it's get these games in today and tomorrow or make them up next Monday which no one wants. They will do everything they can to get these games in before St. Louis leaves town.

True, St. Louis isn't far away, but you have to find a common off day for both teams. Also, you have to take into consideration where those teams would be coming from. The Cubs or Cardinals won't be too thrilled if they have to rush home from the West Coast in order to play a doubleheader.
