No specifics, just on Restricted List for banned substances. Sounds like a drug addiction, but this is just speculation.

Apparently he came forward to the club, asked for help and went on the RL.

Freaking weird run for the Cardinals. Hancock, Carpenter debacle, Rolen's shoulder, LaRussa's DUI, rumors of infighting between Jocketty and ownership, Rick Ankiel making it to the big leagues, Albert's awful start, winning the world series with a crap team, etc. Just a lot of weird stuff.

He looks like a pot head Focker. Can't imagine him turning himself in on that though. Maybe he's a glue sniffer.

It's gotta be bad for him to turn himself in. If you're 34 or however old he is and you're just now getting help, you probably hit the bottom of the bottom. I'm thinking it's alcohol or hard drugs.

The Cardinals have removed infielder Scott Spiezio from the active 25-man roster, and Spiezio has left the club to seek treatment for a substance-abuse problem, team and industry sources said.

Spiezio was moved to Major League Baseball's restricted list, according to the pre-game notes distributed by the Cardinals to media.

Players on the restricted list are not paid and do not count toward the team's active-roster limits.

Spiezio's roster spot was filled when the Cardinals purchased the contract of outfielder Rick Ankiel from Triple-A Memphis today.

STLtoday.com will have more on this story as it develops.

Here is STLtoday.com's earlier story about Spiezio's health, published Wednesday night:

Utilityman Scott Spiezio, who became nauseous after batting practice on Monday and had an IV that night, missed a third straight game on Wednesday and is being treated for an unspecified illness.

Manager Tony La Russa and trainer Barry Weinberg said more information would be available on Thursday.

Before Wednesday's game, Spiezio said he was ready to play and said he could have played on Tuesday if the Cardinals had needed him.

But now it seems he may be out for a while. Before his latest episode, Spiezio had been sidelined on a couple of occasions, including being disabled once, with an infected left index finger.

"It's been a weird year," said Spiezio, who seemed uncomfortable before the game in talking about his illness, which apparently is non-baseball related.

Sounds like he's going through some detox. Probably a good idea to get into rehab instead of trying to quit yourself.

Couldn't possibly be steroids, could it?

That would make zero sense. He wouldn't need rehab for steroids.

lololololol what a stupid tattoo.

It's a likeness of his skank wife. Goes well with his cutoff t shirts, red goatee and lame oakleys.

Seriously, blow it up. Everyone but Duncan and Pujols can go. I don't care.

why would they do that right before they make the playoffs again?

I bet it has something to do with the red dye he uses on that stupid patch of hair on his chin.

CRAP! I was gonna make that joke...

He was getting high when he'd dip his soul patch into the red paint can.

Rumors out of St. Louis:

-Spezio already had issues with alcohol and coke.

-He then picked up pain killers this season after an injury. Found with stuff not prescribed by team doctor.

-Spezio was part of a hard running group of Cardinals. Josh Hancock was a member of this gang. Also included Duncan, Miles and some other guys "from the West Coast".

The main Post writer Bernie M was on the radio hinting other shoes could fall. There's no clubhouse police keeping other players in line.

Keep in mind that Bernie is a gigantic (both literally and figuratively) drama queen.

Tony has a history of covering up in-house for his players. If something else happens, I doubt it gets out.

No way the Cards make the playoffs without the most clutch hitter in all of baseball! (I wish I was kidding about that...)

that's a pretty pathetic gang.
