Choi was the poster boy for the moneyball guys here. They thought he was a future star because he took pitches and walked a fair amount. He did no wrong.

Guess who else takes pitches and walks a fair amount.

Heres a hint: His name starts with a D and ends in Erek Lee

Choi was actually quite good with Florida in '04. Then he was traded to LA, didn't immediately perform and was jerked around for a couple of years. Then last year in Pawtucket, he was horrendous. I don't know if he was battling injuries last year or what, but there's no reason Choi should've put such a pathetic line (.207/.347/.361) in AAA.

I don't know exactly what happened to him. I didn't think he quite looked the same after the concussion as a Cub, but he certainly was doing fine in '04, so it couldn't be due to the concussion.

I liked the Lee/Choi trade, as I saw it as paying the extra money for the guaranteed production. I thought we were at that point in the success cycle where it made sense to pay for the possibly marginal upgrade. To say people were against it is kinda misrepresenting things. There were little to no people that were arguing Choi was better than Lee at the time. They instead wanted to keep Choi at 1B because he was cheap and likely productive. They wanted the money spent on upgrading our anemic SS position or upgrading LF after Alou was averageish at best in '03.

A lot of people were against that trade.

Now, of course, it looks terribly one-sided, but it's easy to forget that prior to 2005, Derrek Lee was closer to Lyle Overbay than Albert Pujols.

Yeah, that Glavine game worries me. I'll also bet that he wins his 300th game on the same day that either Bonds or ARod hits their milestone home run. Baseball is just weird like that when it comes to milestones.

Just think how much crap and criticism ARod's gonna take from the media and fans if it takes him another four games to hit #500.

There wasn't much outcry against the Lee/Choi trade on NSBB. Most of the objections revolved around addressing the area of greatest need and the use of resources (e.g., SS was a black hole). It's also important to keep in mind that Derek Lee was a 1-year rental at the time. He was due to become a FA at the end of that season. Fortunately Hendry signed him to an extension.

If Choi had worked out and Lee had walked at the end of the season (both were reasonably potential outcomes), that trade would be regarded as a disaster now.

He did have hole in his swing IIRC, couldn't hit much inside. Pitchers exploited that plenty.

I always like Choi, but was happy about the trade. Too bad he didn't catch on anywhere else. Is he playing back in Japan or Korea?
