Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN this week is Cubs vs. Mets and it's Tom Glavine vs. Jason Marquis

Not only do we have to listen to Joe Morgan, we will surely have to "look back through the career of Tom Glavine" all while watching a 8-0 loss. If the Cubs somehow manage to pull that one off, then "It's Gonna Happen".

I agree. It would have been nice for him to get 300 last night. Maybe we can score 7 or 8 runs in the first inning and shut up the announcers.

Hakuna Matata.

Yeah, that Glavine game worries me. I'll also bet that he wins his 300th game on the same day that either Bonds or ARod hits their milestone home run. Baseball is just weird like that when it comes to milestones.

maybe lou will decide to bat some lefties in the lineup against him. the hamels game was very dusty-like.

what do you mean? Remlinger is a lefty, he gets lefties out and will invariably struggle against righties because he is a lefty!

The best part was that Yost so severely mismanaged his bullpen (including using today's scheduled starter last night, so everyone is pushed up a day) that they'll be feeling it for the next 3-4 days.

If their starter gets rocked/injured and only goes a few innings, they are screwed beyond belief.

The Cubs are good against guys going for 300.

Especially from NY teams.

Hopefully Kerry Wood pitches at some point during the game. Any chance Hee-Seop Choi could make an appearance? Maybe Eric Karros instead?

I think their ineptitude against lefties could very well trump this long-standing and storied trend.

Glavine is a strange lefty though. I think lefties hit better off him, which may give the Cubs a chance. He hasn't owned them in recent years the way most lefties have.

Is Choi still in baseball anymore?

i like our chances on sunday. hamels and glavine are nothing alike and hamels had his two best pitches working on monday - the straight change and a 94 mph fastball. glavine's fastball and change aren't as far apart in speed and my guess is that soriano yanks at least one of them off the dirt into the left field seats. i also expect ramirez and lee to go the other way all night and one them will get one out.

cubs 6, mets 4

Glavine-Marquis had a matchup in May as well. The Cubs got to Glavine for 4 runs in 6 innings, and Lee didn't even play.

The batter-pitcher matchups also look pretty good against Glavine for that game:

Lee: 15/52, 5 2B, 2 HR, 9 BB, 16 K, .288/.390/.500 (most of these at-bats were probably also when Glavine was better with the Braves and Lee was still just an above average player with the Marlins)

Ramirez: 11/22, 3 HR, 5 BB, 1 K, .500/.571/.955

Soriano: 7/18, 1 HR, 3 BB, 4 K, .389/.476/.611

Marquis: 2/5 (both hits were in the May game)

This might actually be the 1 day to play Floyd over Murton against a left-hander as well:

Floyd: 13/33, 2 HR, 3 BB, 2 K, .394/.444/.636

Murton: 0/7, 2 BB

Given his struggles against LHP, I'd definitely consider it. Maybe find a way to get Fontenot in there. I'm not sure how though. Neither Jones or DeRosa has done a thing against Glavine.

Brewers recalled Elmer Dessens, so they got a fresh arm.

But then they're pitching Elmer Dessens in a Major League baseball game, so it's a win-win.

lefties have a slightly higher BA and OBP but lower SLG. the OPS is equal

I think the effect on the bullpen will be more than a rotation. Monday was an off-day, so losing Bush just means the rest of the pitchers will be pitching on normal rest rather than having an extra day. The Mets are affected the same way since they used Sosa in relief.

They brought up Dessens and put Linebrink on the bereavement list and Parra could easily pitch 3 innings if need be, the Brewers bullpen will be fine. Bush will likely pitch on Thu or Fri, he's been used like that before.

What happened to Linebrink? Is he that broken up about leaving the San Diego weather? And if Parra pitches three innings who goes to the rotation?

His wife had a C-section which technically is a surgery so he was allowed on the list.

Vargas, Gallardo, Bush, Capuano, Suppan is the rotation right now, Parra only started because of the double header.
