Kendall may end up being the Gary Gaetti of 2007
resign for an awful '99/'08

What a great comparison. It's been a good deal, and Kendall has done a good job, but I'm afraid of the re-signing.

Where are all those people that hated this deal?

*raises hand*

I wasn't a fan of it, and then when he started off bad I came here and criticized the deal.

Not afraid to admit it :) Hopefully I continue being wrong about this one. I just thought given Kendall's recent past that he might be running out of gas. The move has really regenerated him, although he's still not all that strong defensively. At least he doesn't appear to make the kind of boneheaded baserunning mistakes that Barrett was making.

Didn't the Cubs try to convert Tyler Houston into a 3B, and Gaetti's signing was a stopgap until Houston was ready? Or was it just a platoon situation?

With Geovany Soto coming up Sep. 1 and Hank White signed for next season, I don't think there's any danger of Kendall being resigned. We are talking about Hendry though, so I suppose anything's possible.

what i said the day he was traded here

Is this a freaking joke? He has a .542 OPS, this fixes nothing, and unless the A's picked up a ton of money, all this does is hamstring us in the future.

Jesus christ why can't the Cubs just let an inexpensive young player fill a freaking role? God dammit.

the future? unless im mistaken he's a free agent after this season. I don't think he's a very good player anymore but this isnt the worst deal hes done. the money isnt an issue for the Cubs and its a buy low chance. there's a pretty damn good chance kendalls obp is .340+ the rest of the season. power? no but as long as hes not an auto out im happy.

I was just going to point out that you singlehandedly brought me around on the trade in a span of like 15 minutes.

OK, one word to sum up Kendall's performance with the Cubs thus far, pathetic.

Yes, he is 1-15 with the Cubs thus far (so far he has a chance to better the starts of Koyie Hill, 1-16, and Rob Bowen, 1-23, but not by much). Yes he grounds everything in sight, but what I'm also worried about is his defense. We knew going in that his defense was going to be subpar, but I didn't realize it would be this bad. Can't throw out a runner to save his life, has trouble blocking balls it seems, drops a lot of pitches.

Furthermore, his inability to get on the same page as Z last night was frustrating. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt I guess because its the first time he has caught Z, but you could tell Z was getting so frustrated by his game calling out there, Z was not focused. Meanwhile, Koyie Hill has seemingly adapted to Z's game almost seamlessly.

Am I making unfair assumptions based on a handful of games here? I'm sure he won't play this bad this entire season, but I don't think he was any sort of upgrade for the Cubs this year. I know several posters will say that they knew that going in, but I was holding out hope that a change of scenery would bring him back some of his old self.

This just shows you that patience is a virtue.

heh, no one saw him obping 400 but its been refreshing to see someone on the cubs do it besides lee.

I admit I was one who hated this trade. I'd eat some crow right now. The season has a long way to go so I hope he keeps it up.

Id like to say I helped him on his way though. Ever since the 7/28 game in Cincy (which I attended) when I was ripping on his pathetic OBP he went 2/4 and his obp (total) was .265, which he hasn't seen since.

One observation, Kendall has been throwing the ball much much better on steal attempts. i think it was game two of the giants series where dave roberts stole 2nd but kendall toss was a strike right to theriot's glove(it was perfect. the pitcher just didnt hold him and roberts was at the half way mark by the time the pitch got to home plate.

I openly greeted this trade once it happened. I didn't think he had fallen off so much so quickly. I also stated he could put up a very good OBP since his second half OBP was .400 last year.

I was about to give up on him after his 1-15 start though.

.306/.404/.418/.822 after last night's game. What a great pickup by Hendry. I'm not going to get all "I told you so" or anything, but I liked this move from the beginning and defended it pretty hard.

I just browsed the Kendall trade thread. That's a great thread to read if you're looking for a few laughs.

what's the link? I tried to find it, but didn't want to keep searching the pages? Is there a search function, or is that a feature of premium?

The search function is disabled-as soon as the board switches over to the new version, it will be back.

I love irony, so I love this comment:

We are worse off now than we were 24 hours ago.

Unreal. This is such a horrid move. People are going to be begging for Michael Barrett in about a month.

Barrett's line with SD:

.231 / .238 / .288, 41 OPS-plus

Perhaps Jim knew something we did not. Just speculating.

That's great. I love being right my one or two times a year.

(Also...clicking on that link only reminds me how well worth the $5 a month Premium is....)

Also, I think this comment from Bruce may have gotten lost in the shuffle that night:

This is a Gary Hughes-scouted deal. Extensively. Now we'll have something to get a handle on as far as Hughes is concerned once this one settles.

Nope, Hughes has been proven to be an idiot around here for not knowing what OPS and DIPS are...

I'm not going to say who this comment is from, but...

and if you believe that at his age and with the numbers of games he's caught kendall is going to be anything remotely close to the player he was six years ago, i don't know what to tell you.

I was looking for that post and just didn't find it...thanks for posting...I remember getting ridiculed for saying "Hey, he hit .295 in June, lets give him a chance...and...he's only 33...."

Give me my crow. This has turned out to be an astute signing.

Reading that thread was highly entertaining. It's not surprising that goony is absolutely no where to be found in this thread.

Hmm...I knew someone was missing. :D

I can't remember if I really defended the trade (though I don't think so) or if I just didn't have a problem with it (more likely). I'm pretty sure I had the thoughts of "well, Kendall can't possibly be any worse than K. Hill and Bowen were" - especially when I found out that the A's were picking up a majority of the leftover salary since the Pirates were already paying a lot.

EDIT: Plus Kendall at least had the chance of being good.
