I'm guessing Angelo wanted his draft pick back from the Walker deal, plus they were probably going to cut Harris anyway, so, viola.

Exactly, except I don't think he would have been cut, although he became redundant once Archuleta came in. No need for him to be a 4th safety and special teams player when Kevin Payne has been impressing in camp.

Brown better stay healthy and Archuleta better...you know....be good.

I think McGowan's always been better than Harris too, he's just not stayed healthy enough to prove it.

I liked Chris Harris.

I thought he was a good guy. I liked him on the post game shows and all that. As a player, I didn't love or hate him.

So did I...but I realized he wasn't that good...ever.

Bigger/better hitter... Larry Whigham or Chris Harris?

Big Hitter, whatever. I've been begging for a safety that can handle pass coverage the past 3 years. (Other than Mike Brown of course)

?? I'm not arguing with you. I think Chris Harris was a mediocre safety, at best. Whigham wasn't anything special, either.

I'm just asking which of those two people think was a bigger hitter. They were/are both pretty well known for laying the wood on guys.

Nice report on camp from Fox Sports...

My first observation from the day's work is this. For those entering draft rooms worried about Rex Grossman, don't be. Grossman demonstrated more poise and confidence in his abilities than he had last year. He checked down to his secondary receivers and completed a number of bullet-like passes to eager targets. Grossman made one mistake on the day, tossing an interception, but even that could have been attributed to a poor route from the receiver. Most impressively, he bounced back from that throw immediately by throwing a strike toward the sideline to Muhsin Muhammad.

He demonstrated good arm strength and mobility, finding his receivers in space to make gains after the catch. Last season, I watched Grossman in practice and found him terribly inconsistent and lacking the confidence in his arm strength and precision. He appeared beaten by Brian Griese at the time. Grossman was a different player entirely on Monday afternoon. He showed good touch on his throws. He had confidence in his ability to find spots in the coverage. And, Grossman appeared comfortable in the fact that this is his team.

Man oh man, I'm so excited for the season.

Likewise.

My mental state can be best described as.... giddy. this thread has made me get up outta my chair and jump up and down in anticipation a few times already, and we haven't even plalyed a pre-season game yet.

I still wish there were a Bears board as good as this one.. or maybe an NFL subforum?

Seems like most of the random Bears boards I find are full of idiots.

Not sure which I would take. I think being a good hitter in the Bears secondary is a prerequesite to getting much time at all. Guys like Mike Green, who couldn't hit hard and then struggled in coverage, have been let go pretty quickly. Even our scrubs, such as McGowan and Worrell, have been able to lay the wood. In coverage I found Harris to be lacking, and he would overrun tackles a little too often for my taste. That's why I'm not upset he was dealt.

However, there's no question he was a great guy, and he's definitely good enough to stay in the league for awhile.

I don't know about that trade. I don't have much faith in Manning right now and we could definitely have used the depth there.

We do have Manning, AA, Brown, McGowan, and Payne, along with a few other rooks. If they were that quick to trade Harris away, Manning/McGowan/Payne must be impressing somewhat.

I liked Harris. Harris is what he is.....he was a 6th round pick, who wasn't recruited by major football programs. He has slightly below average speed for a safety and is slightly below average instinctively. There was a reason he was demoted from the starter at FS in week 3. There was also a reason why he wasn't the 1st choice to replace an injured Mike Brown at SS. That being said, he isn't a bad player. He made the most out of his talent. He hit hard, and repeatedly stepped up when he was called upon to do so. He was finally gonna start the season in the role he was meant for....a backup safety.

I don't think anything's wrong with the move. The Bears still have the depth at the S position. Basically a trade of Darwin Walker for Chris Harris, filling a need and getting rid of what probably was a surplus.

The depth is just fine with Brown, Archuleta, Manning, McGowan and Payne. Harris isn't exactly a world-beater (he had too important a role last season for such a good defense), he's a nice guy to have on the field but I think McGowan could easily outplay him.

I also have hopes that Manning will improve quite a bit. I'm glad he's not moving to CB this season but I'd love to see what he'd do there in the future.

i think manning has more potential than harris, and if he's not relied upon as a starter, he will provide them with much more value. i think manning could be a very good nickel back.

And I think the Bears did it right, too. Early in training camp, you trade a guy and he has time to catch on with his new team before the season starts. If it's done real late he probably has to sit while he learns a new system.

I like the idea of Walker for Harris, it's basically trading from a position of strength & depth to acquire a real good piece at a position where we were thin. Took 2 trades to get it done, but the result is the same.

i'm trying to temper my enthusiasm for this season by remembering that the Eagles, Steelers and Bengals games will preempt most Bears games in my region this fall
