I think you missed the part about wanting a lefty with success.

He's had success. It's been awhile but still... LOL

For those who care Matt Harrison is out of the deal due to shoulder problems:

Per Ken Rosenthal:

"The Braves are still offering catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Class A shortstop Elvis Andrus for Teixeira, and they gave the Rangers a list of young pitchers to consider as Harrison's replacement.

The list does not include left-hander Jo-Jo Reyes, but otherwise the talks remain fluid. It is even conceivable that the deal could be expanded from a 3-for-1 to a 4-for-2."

Rosenthal is reporting it is a done deal now.

The deal is done, pending a review of the medical records of the players involved, according to major-league sources.

The Braves will receive Teixeira and left-handed reliever Ron Mahay.

The Rangers will receive catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Class A shortstop Elvis Andrus and two pitching prospects.

i'm fine with this. The Cubs were never mentioned in connection to either Teixeira or Salty, so my hopes were never dashed

But on the other hand, one of the Cubs competition for the wild card just got a lot stronger in the short term. I guess the Cubs just better win the division instead :)

*shakes head at Rangers*

They trade Lofton and Texiera for 2 top prospect catchers? Although they got some pitching in this deal, that should have been their main target.

I know Andrus is young, but he hasn't done much in his pro career so far.

2005 in GCL: .295/.377/.398

2006 in Low-A: .265/.324/.362

This year in Myrtle Beach:.244/.330/.335

Granted, the Kid isn't even 19 yet, he'll turn 19 at the end of August. Obvioulsy the hopes are high for him, but we'll see if he ever pans out.

The offense salty brings to the table, if the other catcher prospect comes up sooner, you could move him to 1b.

those are good deals that needed to be made for the rangers, imo of course.

Schuerholz is playing chess while everyone else is playing checkers.

yeah, but he just traded a very valuable, long term-inexpensive commodity for a guy who's due to make a killing. yes, a jones's deal is up and he'll be more than replacing that production next year--but i think salty is an all-star sooner than later. both teams got what they wanted.

In Salty and Andrus' case, their reputation exceeds what they've actually done. He sold high and got one of the best hitters in the game at a position of need for the remainder of this year and all of next, and if Tex is too expensive then they'll certainly take the draft picks to replace Salty and Andrus. And I haven't even brought up Schuerholz's history when dealing prospects.

Salty is likely moving to 1B to replace Texiera. They don't want to wear his bat down by playing C everyday in the Texas heat.

But unlike a lot of trade deadline deals for guys about to break the bank, he traded for a guy whom he still controls through next year. Tex in Atlanta is pretty huge. He is still very much in his prime, unlike the guys in their 30's we hear about being in their prime.

You're talking about taking your worst performing position on the roster and possibly turning it into top 5 territory. It would be like the Cubs getting Jeter to fill the SS problem, although a much younger Jeter who isn't a liability with the glove.

I don't feel so bad about it because there's no way the Cubs could have matched this deal. Atlanta had enough prospects and spare parts to make this deal work.

This should be where things get interesting. The Braves are 4.5 behind the Mets and a game behind the Phillies in the East. They're also 2.5 out in the Wild Card. However, they just replaced their black hole at 1B (between Franco, Salty, and Thorman, it was baaaaaaaaaaaaaad) with one of the best young hitters in baseball. Moreover, they get to hang onto him next year.

So...what do the Mets and Phillies do now, considering Atlanta just patched up one of its biggest holes?

I agree, this was a win win. Andrus and Salty, while valuable (obviously the latter much more than the former) are redundent in the ATL system. They got pathetic production out of 1B this year (one could say Shchuerholz was finger painting while everyone else was playing chess in the LaRoche trade). They get a year and a playoff run out of Tex and 2 draft picks. Schuerholz's confidence in their latin development and drafting allows this to go down.

The Mets have to get an OF, I think.
