I'd rather see Glaus at 1B - could extend the productive years of his career there, given his injury history. Lee is a fantastic athlete and thus I think could play RF. My only question is whether he has the arm to play out there.

 

Note: I have not waded through all the pages of this thread to determine whether anyone else floated this idea or analyzed it.

If we are thinking outside the box and putting Glaus at SS, why not put him in RF instead?

 

Glaus has heel and ankle and, I think, back problems. He's not going to be spending anytime in RF or SS for that matter.

I'm not sure if he was referring to Modzilla or Soriano12 that way. But either way, this isn't exactly what we had in mind when restoring the thread.

I heard Modzilla has no sexual orientation and reproduces through mitosis by injecting a copy of itself into the dead husk of a banned screen name. Once the new Modzilla gets old enough it kills the old Modzilla and eats it whole.

Hopefully someone steps over the line soon because Modzilla has an awesome avatar.

 

Anyway, I don't see us getting a new shortstop any time soon, like, within this season. It appears it's Cedeno/Theriot, do or die.

Agreed. At this point, I can only see Hendry upgrading RF and/or CF - and one of those needs could be removed in his mind if Jacque continues to hit well. He picked up Kendall so he's done at catcher and he's got Cedeno/Theriot for short.

Other options? A lot of people have been harping for Adam Dunn, and rightfully so. If Dunn were acquired and in our lineup tomorrow he'd be netting us just 12.5 runs because he is the same hitter as Glaus and would be expected to be about 8 runs worse on defense for the rest of the season.

 

How can you say Dunn is 8 runs worse defensivley then Glaus when you have Glaus playing out of position (SS or RF) with the Cubs?

Because RF isn't a very hard position to play. The way these weights are decided use real data of players making the transition too and from positions, so it accounts for it.

 

If you're really going to play people out of position, the guy to move is Derrek Lee, who athletically could easily play in the OF. You can replace him with a big bat at 1B easily.

 

Hell, Lee could probably play CF.

Why fix it when it's not even broke? Izturis especially, and Bowen were two very good finds. The team is winning and you go and trade Izturis for nothing that is going to benefit the team for the rest of this season, while giving up an excellent shortstop. I am completely dumbfounded why the organization gives up on a 27-year-old Gold Glove shortstop, and nothing to get them to the ultimate goal this season. Nothing against Mr. Theriot, we all know he is very capable, I just feel the air has been kind of let out of the bubble as far as the Cubbies' fortune has gone since this move to the Pirates has been made. -- Mike St. Amand, Chatham, Ill.

 

The Cubs needed to play Theriot at short and were doing Izturis a favor by sending him to Pittsburgh, since he wasn't playing here because he wasn't hitting or playing Gold Glove caliber shortstop. Bowen was a stop-gap move that didn't work out, and Hendry bailed before it got ugly.
