If so, I will point out that counting his 3 plate appearances to-date today, Jacque Jones has a .928 OPS in the month of July.

36 plate appearances (31 at bats), 12 hits (9 singles, 3 doubles) and 4 walks resulting in:

.444 OBP

.484 SLG

If Gerald Perry has been working with him, it does look like something has finally clicked (for now).

Trade him while he's hot IF you can get something back that improves the team. At this point, we're getting into the stretch run and can't afford to weaken the team just to dump some cash. Pie just doesn't seem to be ready, and Pagan is certainly not the answer.

Unless you can upgrade in CF by trading Jacque, you really just have to leave him there and hope Perry has turned him around.

Of course, I'm glad Aramis just hit a 3 run HR! But part of me would have liked to see Jacque come up again with runners in scoring position.

Then again, Jacque just struck out.

With Soriano, Lee, and Ramirez producing, I don't mind having Jones lower in the lineup. He isn't a middle of the order hitter, but is still someone that can be productive the rest of the way in the #7 hole.

In April of 2005 Neifi Perez had an OBP of 403 and an OPS of 962,

Neifi's September '04 and April '05 as an example of random, vast fluctuations in player performance is better used as an example of why Jacque's poor first half was a fluke.

Indeed, Jacque's career OPS v. RHP is much closer to his performance in July than it is to his performance in the first half.

I say keep jaque he could really be good for a second half run. Probably could produce a little better than pie could. No reason to rush a trade, UNLESS we now get overcompinsated for the trade. Which means we're in good shape if he continues.

Everything seems to be going right for the cubs now.

With the lineup we've been trotting out there with Lee on suspension and Floyd day to day, it couldn't have come at a more opportune time.

It may be a blessing in disguise that the trade of Jones to Florida fell through. Sometimes the best moves are the ones you don't make.

Jones producing again (at least for now) and Izzy traded. Eyre may be the only real deadweight remaining, and even he's done better lately when used in a mopup role.

Hmm, I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that hes only getting ABs vs righties?

That is true, but I think it also might have something to do with more playing time overall.

jacque has also been, at least to an extent, a successful major league baseball player. neifi has not.

And perhaps, after the almost-trade, Lou had a pep talk with him and helped restore his confidence.

Nothing like the old "hey, we were going to trade you for nobody and pay half your remaining salary, but those jerks wanted us to pay 2/3rds so we told them to stick it" pep talk to restore confidence. :D

Or maybe it was more like reading him the riot act: "Nobody wants you the way you're playing now, so if you want to be traded you need to start producing and establishing some value."

Ride the camel till it runs out of water.

Agreed. We have a replacement in Pie if needed, but I'm hoping Jacque has an electric second half.

Me too.

Remember that Jacque was one of the players that Lou was working on his swing in late June. He was working on shortening that swing, and so far it is has looked quite good. I'd probably keep Jacque the rest of the year unless he becomes a person of pretty good value for another team that could be used to strengthen the club in another area.

I also like how Jacque has looked better against left-handers in the last week or two. He doesn't look completely overmatched against them-in fact, I think he had 2 walks and two hits against left-handers on Wednesday and Thursday, and took one other at-bat to 3-2 before flying out. I'm not saying that Jacque should ever start against a left-hander, but it's still nice to see.

It might be one of those things that happened for a reason...
