The Cubs need to improve their right handed hitting and Dye is a free agent at the end of the year. Cubs would not be adding any additional salary for new owners. It would not take a top prospect to pull the deal off.

Not my first choice, but I doubt Junior will be available as he approaches 600 HR and I have to bet Hendry has to work within future financial parameters.

As someone else said, it was reported in San Diego that the Padres called to inquire about Dye, and the White Sox asked for Khalil Greene and Linebrink. There's no way I'd pay nearly that price for Dye.

They may have asked for them, but the White Sox will eventually dump him for next to nothing and eat quite a bit of money in the process.

The problem is that the odds that Dye will be much of an upgrade the last few months of the season aren't all that high.

Speaking of outrageous claims, apparently the Braves inquired about Dimitri Young and Bowden asked for either Salty or Escobar.

It's still early in July, so that's to be expected. Especially coming from Bowden, although he'll keep doing that until 2 hours before the deadline.

Trading for Dye or some of the other names mentioned (Abreu, Burrell, Andruw Jones, etc.) only makes sense if you believe you can "catch lightning in a bottle" for 2-3 months. They might be cheaper, but it would be nice to get someone you know you can count on.

I read that article and it appears like a way for Williams to say he improved this year and the future. He and Guillen have recently had another meeting discussing the state of the 2007 team, and they both agreed if the Sox are still in the race, especially if they have a good showing against the Twins this weekend.

The Sox have long been out of the race, and I'm sensing Williams is too scared to admit it because he's afraid of losing the trades that are inevitable for his sinking club.

Dye's missed some time with what I think was a hamstring injury. If he's healthy, he's not a bad option to trade for, but Sox fans have claimed he's gotten old, fast. Even his defense has diminished from last year.

That's Dye's numbers for this year. He's probably not that bad.

315/385/622

That's his numbers last season. He's not that good. Call 2006 a fluke season.

172/261/253- 03

265/329/464- 04

274/333/512- 05

Assuming 2006 was a fluke, and looking at the three seasons prior to that one, Dye is an average, but not great hitter. Given that he's gotten older, the best we could hope from Dye is probably 260/320/450. I think we could get the same production from Murton if we called him back up.

I just don't think Dye is the answer. If Kenny wants to trade him for Ryan Harvey or Brian Dopirak or Matt Craig or Gary Cates or someone like that, sure. But if he's asking for anyone worth a damn, we'd probably do better to acquire Ausmus to upgrade the catching position or go after Kenny Lofton to improve our production in CF.

The Sox are not only out of the race, but I think they are in very serious trouble for the next 3-4 years. The Indians and Twins are not only better, but much younger and the Tigers are certainly better for now. Kenny Williams needs to trade Buerhle et al. for as many good prospects as he can get to think about competing in 2009-2010. Don't forget that he has an owner that won't spend much on the free agent market.

I would agree. Kenny needs to deal his potential fa's. If he doesn't he'll be screwing the team for years.

And I am no fan of Williams, but he can't be stupid enough to think he could get Greene and Linebrink for Dye.

As far as Williams, yes he is asking for top talent for his free agents to be. I guess he will have them all year, if that's the case.

I'd rather the Cubs bring back Sammy to platoon with Floyd.

I also heard that Bowden also talked about Matt Harrison and Brandon James in any deal for Young?

I mean, come on...Bowden you CAN'T BE THAT STUPID. I remember when he wanted both Juan Cruz and Corey Patterson for Pokey Reese, but these rumors are borderline insane.

Hey, sometimes teams are dumb enough to fork guys like that over. Look at Scott Kazmir for Victor Zambrano.

Yeah, I'd rather have Sosa as well, but I'd take Dye if the Sox were not asking too much for him. Face it, this team needs power and either one of these guys immediately gives you a power threat. But I don't think Dye will be a realistic possibility if Williams is going to have that kind of asking price for him.

Bowden and Williams can make outrageous demands for their free agents because it's still early. Let's see what they'll accept on July 31st.

With the way Dye is hitting, he'd have to be awful cheap if I were to be in favor of getting him.

Apparently, when Towers inquired about Dye, Kenny Williams asked for Khalil Greene and Scott Linebrink.

And because there are GM's like Krivisky that will hand over Austin Kearns and Felipe Lopez for two middling relief pitchers.

Note that Bowden inexcusably sat on Soriano last year when the Nationals were hopelessly out of the race.

That is high-larious. Why didn't he ask for Gonzalez too?

Dye is the move to make.......I bet the Sox would ask alot to help the Cubs....One of the Cubs top prospects like Patterson or a pitcher like Veal.

I would consider Patterson because of the depth we have at second; there's no way I'd deal Veal for Dye.

Dye's numbers indicate last year was a fluke. While he's not as bad as he's played, I'm not sure offensively that he's an upgrade over Floyd. I think if given the chance, Murton could be just as productive as Dye.

Unless he's cheap, Dye should not be acquired. Paying a price as high as Veal would be dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb.
