i'm not terribly optomistic he'll be catching for the cubs next year, considering he hasn't gotten a sniff of the big leagues this year. considering the debacle that's been the catcher position in '07, you'd think he'd at least have a chance to earn the job.

I suppose McCann is the reason the Braves would be willing to part ways with Saltineamoochacho?

Salt, ala (as in cart), mach (as in mach speed), EEa.

Why has Soto been playing 1B in Iowa?

He had an injury that wouldn't let him catch, I think he's healthy now and catching.

(a) the cubs aren't going to get salty, as much as some of you want him

(b) soto will probably not get a real chance with the cubs

I could see Jim making up for his stupid decision by making a dumber one... like bringing in Piazza (who no longer has a place in Oakland with the emergence of Jack Cust)

Cust is precisely the reason the A's are bringing Piazza back as a catcher. He was supposed to start his rehab stint in Sacramento but when the A's made this decision they gave him some extra time to make sure his shoulder was ready before he started throwing.

I like several things about Soto. I like that he's supposed to be good defensively. Neither of the guys are exactly "good". I like the .071 IsoD. If he hits .250 in the majors, he'd still have an OBP in the .310-.330 range (not great but way better than the current duo). I also like that he's young and inexpensive. Going young at catcher is always a good idea because of the high risk of injury and the fact that you don't want to be paying a guy 7-10M to play 3/4 of your ballgames.

I seriously doubt the Cubs will give Soto a call-up until their current hot streak ends. When the team is winning consistently, managers tend to leave things the way they are. If they continue winning like they have the past 2 weeks, it's probably a September callup for Soto, which would be fine with me, since he would be able to come in without much pressure and maybe make the postseason roster and have an impact in the playoffs.

the question is...why in the world is he not here now?

the only reason i can think of is maybe hendry IS trying to get salty

other than that...i am clueless

He's been playing First Base a lot, so I think he has a shoulder problem. Once that's better I am sure he'll be up .

I really don't understand why he hasn't been called up yet. He's being fontenot'ed down in AAA.

He's ok now as he's predominantly catching at Iowa again.

And its not working. I think the A's are concluding that his arm won't be healthy enough to be back behind the plate this year. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/4928/news

Does it really matter if his arm is healthy? He couldnt throw when he had a healthy arm, so whats the big deal if its hurt, either way hes not throwing anybody out.

Unfortunately, I believe you will be proven correct.

Hill is out of options and Bowen has just been traded for.

I think it was more of an issue of getting rid of Barrett, than trading for Bowen...

While Truffle's probably right about a, I'm still holding out a little hope Hendry will find a way to bring in Salty.

I don't think we have the players to get Salty especially now that we're playing too well to trade Zambrano.

I can understand a) and c)

But on b) -- how will soto get no chance when its Hendry keeping him out and Hendry's days with the Cubs are numbered?

b) and c) go hand in hand.

Hendry's job is effectively on the line right now with this season and frankly, if he's too stupid to realize that calling up Soto to the Cubs might actually help the team and therefore help Hendry keep his job, he deserves to be fired.

I really don't think Soto is the answer to our catching problems. It is possible that he's really turned a corner, but I think you'd see those fancy numbers evaporate in a hurry if he came to the majors. As excited as I want to be about the performances of Soto, Cedeno, Pie, Patterson, Coats, Hoffpauir & others at Iowa, I'm really just thinking there's a massive uplift in offense in either the PCL or Iowa in particular this season. It's either that or the greatest coaching job in history to get that many players with only mediocre to decent histories at the plate all performing way, way, way above their career numbers at one time.

I'm guessing you could easily see a line of .220/.280/.290 out of Soto at the major league level. That's a pessimistic projection, but my actual guess wouldn't be all that much higher for his initial campaign.

And sadly, that line would be better than what the Hill/Bowen tandem has contributed thus far.
