I know it hasn't killed our team lately, but that gigantic black hole in the batting order where our catchers hit is going to catch up with us eventually.

Koyie Hill with the Cubs is 8 for 50.

Bowen is at 1 for 20.

No thanks.

Soto in AAA is hitting .338, 11 hr, 51 rbi, .409 obp, .983 ops.

He does K at a ghastly rate though, 53 times in 216 AB's.

That means he could K up to 150 times in a season. Still I'd take given him a chance. .

better than GIDP.

Bowen is not going down, and Hill has been Zambrano's partner in his recent surge. That is the only reason I can really think of.

Soto should be on this team right now. He should have been brought up the minute the Cubs decided they wanted to get rid of Barrett. Bowen and Hill aren't getting it done. Bring him up tonight. Have him bring Cedeno with him.

Hill is out of options and Bowen has just been traded for. That means that hill is the unlucky man and will eventually be moved. I have my doubts that Bowen is a better backup than Hill, but given that Bowen is the new commodity, it's a no-brainer. Hill AND Bowen are FINE backups, but ONLY backups...we need Soto or another full time starter at C.

I could see Jim making up for his stupid decision by making a dumber one... like bringing in Piazza (who no longer has a place in Oakland with the emergence of Jack Cust)

I'm sorry but Hendry deserves more credit than this. Plus its pretty clear they want someone with defensive abilites over offensive.

How good is their defense really though?

I have to laugh, Koyie Hill said in a radio interview a couple weeks back (paraphrase) "funny thing is, I was always known as an offensive catcher"

Yeah, riiiiiiiight Koyie. Little league doesn't count.

Correction:

Jim Hendry wanted somebody with more defensive abilities than offensive. Being as fickle as he is, he's gonna love this plan until we lose 7 of 10 after our new catchers can't capitalize at the plate in close games.

Jim Hendry flip flops more often than a Russian gymnist. You really think he'll stick with this plan once the first few signs of failure inevitably start to show?

I'll grant, it's much more likely he brings up Soto and cuts bait on Hill. But I see zero chance that Hill/Bowen is our catching tandem for the rest of the year.

Soto has to be up next season or traded because otherwise the Cubs will risk losing him when they send him down...and you know a team will pick up a young C like Soto if they have the chance.

Nicely done. Much better to just post the link with a name like that.

Might want to check with Cubs equipment managers before trading for him. Need to get them to waive their "no ridiculous 20 character names" clause ;)

Saltalamacchia. I don't even have to look it up. 8-) (Though I'm thankful I am not a Braves minor league fan who had to type that up daily doing minor league boxes up.)

Hill is not even a fine back up. He is worse than Bako. Just minor league filler that lucked into a roster spot due to Blanco being hurt at the same time Soto had a minor injury.

All I can figure is that the Cubs are hoping that Blanco will get back soon and since the team is going good now they figure they don't need to make a move until then. Seems to me that eventually either Blanco will get back and take over a majority of the catching duties or they will find out that Blanco's injury is not going to allow him to return in the near future and at that point bring Soto up and make a commitment to give him consistent playing time.
