That's because Chip would raise his voice on a cheap pop up to shallow left. It made it seem he recognized the homer earlier, when in reality Chip used the inflection far too often. Len at least saves his excitement for when he is sure it is deserved.

True, but it seems that too often the moment has passed when Len gets excited. If the ball is landing at the same time your call reaches it's crescendo, the moment is ruined. The excitement of the call comes during the time between contact but before the moment it becomes obvious to the fan at home that a HR has been hit.

Once I can tell the ball has left the park, the call is largely superfluous. But at the same time, I hate it when I get excited over nothing.

It's a fine line.

Just because we hate Chip doesn't mean he didn't actually have some good points. But if we want to talk about announcers who were premature on homer calls, Harry put his grandson to shame.

I love Len Kasper much more than Chip, and his call today was spectacular.

Yeah, but when I've left the room to use the john, I'd rather the HR call be a bit late than to get me all excited that I start to try to wrap it up only to find out it was a shallow fly ball to the left fielder.

What I hated about Chip was that his HR call was the same for both teams:

"SWUNG ON BELTED, DEEP TOWARDS LEFT FIELD, WAY BACK AND GONE"

*i run into room*

"THAT'S A HOME RUN FOR JEFF BAGWELL"

me: :?

This is another issue altogether. I love the way Len handles it. I hated how Chip got just as excited for opposition homers, but I hate homeristic babies like Hawk even more. I think you should show preference to your team, but not so much so that it makes you unprofessional.

Exactly. Len doesn't get excited for the other team going deep at all, but he still lets you know what happened and how it affects the game.

He's probably the best PBP guy in baseball. Maybe if he were on Fox and trying to show the image of neutrality I'd feel differently. But he's ours and I love the guy.

See the thing about Chip and that call was that I felt his excitement all the way through the end. . . . . AND THE CUBS COME BACK TO WIIIN IT!! After Len's CuuuuuuuuuuuuuuBS win!! Which was great by the Way. The excitement in his voice seemed to taper off. Ended with a quite cheesy "Oh baby!". And I don't like he just says the player's name. "Ramirez. . . . two run shot!!".

I love Len's calls ok. But his best doesn't come close to Chip's best.

How can you love something ok?

Chip Carey was a bad announcer, and I'm glad I don't have to hear his voice on the air anymore.

To be fair, Chip was much better at recognizing homers off the bat and calling them.

But that's about it.

That's my biggest complaint about Len. Aside from ARam's blast today, I can't remember that last time that he called a HR from the moment it left the bat.

Don't get me wrong, I love Len. I think he's a great announcer and he adds a lot to the broadcast. But his depth perception leaves a lot to be desired.

"Swung on, belted!"... is so much better than "high fly ball to right field... it's outta here!"

It's my only complaint about Len.

And Chip had a great HR call.

Len knew that one right off the bat so I'm not sure what this criticism is. Ron makes Pat's call awesome. I also have to say I really like Uecker as an announcer.

But how many times did Chip miss with his, "swung on, belted!" comments? There were times when he was like a fan with a poor angle in the ballpark who would get excited for any flyball to the outfield (HR or easy flyout).

No one said Lens misses them all, just a lot of them. I have praised today's call a few times in this thread.

And Uecker is quite good despite his affiliation. At least what I've heard.

Agreed. To each their own, but I thought Chip was such a bland, "typical" announcer.

He missed a lot, but not much more than most. We Cubs fans are too spoiled. We can nitpick about Harry, Chip, Len & Co., but they all were much better than the average pbp guy. If I have learned anything from seeing broadcasts from other teams and having XM, it is that the vast majority of broadcasters flat out suck compared to what we're used to.

agreed, Chip is much better than most of the others out there

You've also got to remember a lot of Chip's calls were on Sosa 450-500 foot moonshots. It was a lot easier to get a good read off a Sosa bomb than guys like Lee and Ramirez who aren't hitting moonshots every time up but more lined shots.

i liked chip when he was in chicago. not so much joe carter, but chip was good. and now he does an excellent call for atlanta, and i often watch their games on tbs to hear him announce.

however, len >>>>>>>> chip. and bob is a good color man, too. it's just that len, imo, has the chance to become one of the better baseball announcers ever if he stays with the cubs for a long time. also, he is becoming a cubs fan quickly. and seems to 'get it,' as far as understanding us.

Len and Pat both enjoy the journey as well as the destination.

One thing I really like about Pat's call is that he does what experienced baseball fans do at a game if the ball isn't a no-doubt-about-it HR: he watches the outfielder. Listening to Pat really puts me at the game:

"And there's a high drive deep to left, Dunn is at the track, at the wall .. that ball is gone!"

Judging by the two games I saw in person this week, fans with poor angles or good angles all went nuts on every ball hit into the air.
