I think we're going to win big today, with Z having another outstanding performance.

I actually have a bad feeling about today. Would have liked to see Pie in the lineup. And Hirsh's stats are actually pretty good on the road & during the day.

Odd that Hill is starting the day game after the night game.

Lou really hates Izturis.

Another reason why Lou has grown on me. He actually hates players who suck at their jobs.

I was just saying last night that Lou has been very "not Dusty-like" recently. Which is a very good thing.

Game Notes.

TEAM EFFORT: The Cubs used hits from 10 different players and 6 players drove in at least 1 run in Chicago’s 8-5 win last night vs. Colorado … the win extends the club’s winning streak to 5 games, tying the team’s season high done May 1-6 … Chicago is looking to win 6-straight games for the first time since a 7-game streak, May 27-June 2, 2005 against Colorado (3-0), Los Angeles (3-0) and San Diego (1-0).

Will Ohman picked up his first career save last night, finishing the game by stranding 2 inherited runners when he induced Todd Helton to pop out to shortstop Mike Fontenot.

The Cubs today continue a 6-game homestand with the final game of a 3-game set against the Colorado Rockies (2-0) … the ‘stand continues with a 3-game set against the Milwaukee Brewers beginning Friday after an off-day Thursday … after that, Chicago concludes the first half with a 7-game trip to Washington (4 games) and Pittsburgh (3 games).

LOOKING FOR THE SWEEP: The Cubs are looking to sweep the Rockies at home for the first time since Colorado’s first season of existence … Chicago recorded a 4-game sweep against the Rockies, July 15-18, 1993, at Wrigley Field.

Chicago, who entered this series with a sweep of the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field over the weekend, is looking to sweep consecutive series for the first time since April 20-25, 2004 – they went 2-0 in Pittsburgh before sweeping the Mets in a 3-game set at Wrigley.

HOMEGROWN CUBS: Chicago’s current 25-man roster features 9 players signed and developed by the organization … that includes 2 position players – Felix Pie and Ryan Theriot – and 7 of the 11 pitchers currently on the squad including today’s starter Carlos Zambrano, who was signed by the Cubs as a non-drafted free agent July of 1997.

Other “homegrown” Cubs hurlers include: Rich Hill, Carlos Marmol, Sean Marshall, Will Ohman, Billy Petrick and Michael Wuertz.

I concur. Cubs get killed today 8-2.

More from the game notes...

OUT OF THE GATES: Chicago has scored a total of 7 runs over the first innings of their first 2 games against the Rockies this week … yesterday, the Cubs posted 3 runs with 2 outs in the opening frame, thanks to an Aramis Ramirez RBI single and a Cliff Floyd 2-run homer … Monday, Chicago posted 4 first-inning runs thanks in part to an Angel Pagan 3-run homer.

On the season, the Cubs’ 59 first-inning runs are the most they’ve scored in any frame … Chicago has scored in the opening frame in 4 of their last 5 games dating to Friday’s series-opening contest against the White Sox at U.S. Cellular.

The Cubs have plated at least 1 run in the first inning in 31 games this season, the most often they’ve scored in any inning.

NINE IS FINE: Infielder Mike Fontenot enters today’s game with a 9-game hitting streak, making him just the sixth Cubs left-handed hitter to enjoy a streak of at least 9 games since the start of the 2000 season … it’s the longest streak by a Cubs left-handed batter since Juan Pierre had a 9-game streak to end the 2006 campaign.

The Louisiana State University alum has hit safely in 16 of 17 games since his second call-up to the majors June 9.

Fontenot’s 5-for-5 game Monday night made him the first Cubs left-handed batter to go 5-for-5 since Mark Grace turned the trick, August 6, 2000 at San Diego.

NOT A BAD MONTH: The Cubs’ 15 June victories are tied for the most among National League clubs along with division rival Milwaukee … Chicago’s .600 winning percentage (15-10) this month ranks third-best in the Senior Circuit behind Milwaukee (.652) and Philadelphia (.609), and seventh-best in the majors

Why no Aram??

Probably helping him rest the knee.

Lou says he doesn't like to bring up young guys and have them sit because they lose their sharpness. Wants to get Petrick some work, but also wants Z to get deep today.

Z told Lou the other night that he could go in if needed. Thankfully, Lou declined.

He said Pie is just struggling with the bat and he doesn't want to just keep running him out there if he's struggling and have him lose confidence. He just wants him to take a little time and work it out with Gerald.

Day game after a night game and he just came off the DL... Still would be nice to see him start today figuring there's a scheduled off day tomorrow. Should be able to pinch hit.

I'd probably switch Derosa with Pagan in the lineup.

when you have zambrano in the lineup, aram is less of a necessity. ;)
