I say take care of all his contract (or however much Bud allows) and try to milk as good a prospect as you can.

My thoughts exactly.

I wonder if this would've gone any differently had we not signed 20 right fielders for this season.

A prospect and paying 90% of his salary > getting nothing and paying 100% of his salary

I'd say this thread is a good example of when keeping all "sort of related" conversation in one thread can be a bad idea.

I'm the opposite. I think the extra salary relief is more valuable than the difference between the non-prospects we'd get.

The thing is, that is OUR perception of Jones' value. Hendry, on the other hand, may (probably does) perceive his value much higher. If Hendry thinks that Jones is worth a top 10 prospect in their organization, he's not gonna get it (i think). Its finding that break-even point (to steal from managerial accounting).

Anyone else think the Marlins are just trying to hold Hendry hostage up against the deadline of tonight's game and squeeze as much money out of him as possible?

Certainly possible. But we're down to 20 minutes. And if Selig has to approve of a deal, then its looking increasingly unlikely.

Cubs are probably just finishing up a deal for Cabrera, don't worry guys.

I would go into shock if that happens.

I'm thinking this deal still gets done, although it's not sounding promising. Edited by reds44

The Cubs could just DFA Jones and it buys them 10 days if there was anything holding up a transaction before the game.

And I thought I was near heart failure last night.

That's probably the case or the deal is awaiting League approval.

That would give the Marlins (or any other team wanting him) so much leverage though.

Exactly. At that point the marlins could just say "Well, if you dont give us what we ask for, we'll just let you have to release him. Then you have to pay his whole salary. Sucks to be you"

If a trade is this close, DFAing him would be a terrible decision. Any team that decided it couldn't wait the 10 days and therefore sought a trade would offer up even worse talent than now and we'd likely have to eat even more salary to make that happen.

Yep, they could pick him up, give up nothing, and pay him the league minimum.

they can send down Theriot or DFA Izturis, no need to specifically make a move on Jones right now -- Cedeno could be called up if Jones is moved tomorrow.

Deals off guys.

FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal reports that the Jacque Jones-to-Florida deal won't happen, "barring an unexpected reversal."

The Marlins wanted Jones as their primary center fielder, but apparentely the Cubs were quite desperate enough to get rid of him. Either they refused to pay the majority of the $7 million he's still owed or they wanted a better prospect in return if they were going to eat the salary.

Sorry.

while we pay him $8 mil over two years.
