From the NW Herald:

Cubs manager Lou Piniella would not confirm the trade, but when asked why Jones never succeeded as a Cub, he said, "I wish I knew."

I'll help you out, Lou - he's not a good baseball player.

I don't know about you guys, but I've got a feeling Jacque is going to have some nasty things to say about the organization on his way out.

i really don't think so. the guy can't even do more than shrug his shoulders after striking out, so i doubt he can muster the energy to speak in audible tones, let alone in a spiteful manner.

The lefty pitchers on the Greensboro roster are:

Tom Cowley (age 23) - 65.1 IP, 3.31 ERA, 49 K/18 BB

Avi Rasowsky (age 24) - 9.1 IP, 5.59 ERA, 20 K/7 BB

Graham Taylor (age 23) - 101.2 IP, 2.66 ERA, 74 K/5 BB

Sean West (DL)

Any idea what West's injury is? He hasn't pitched all season long.

Arthroscopic shoulder surgery, he's out for the season.

something with the labrum.... don't think it was completely torn, probably similar to what prior had done

I'd take him, he's the best pitcher of that group when healthy.

I know he's not the guy you're getting either, same goes with Taylor.

Btw, not sure if this has been posted but the said on 1000 that the deal is still pending because Bud has to sign off on it due to the fact a mil. plus is changing hands.

Looking around the Internet, it was a "torn labrum."

Uh oh......Latest from Rosenthal ...

The Marlins could be on the verge of acquiring Jacque Jones to be their regular center fielder.

Jones, 31, has been traded, according to the Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel, but the deal has hit a "major snag," a major-league source told FOXSports.com. As of 6:20 p.m. ET, the Cubs had yet to inform Jones that he had been dealt, another source said.

The snag likely involves money — Jones is earning $4 million this season and $5 million next season. The low-revenue Marlins almost certainly would require the high-revenue Cubs to pay the majority of Jones' remaining salary as part of the deal.

Any transaction involving more than $1 million requires the approval of the commissioner's office. The quality of the player the Cubs would acquire for Jones would almost certainly hinge on the amount of money they would pay the Marlins.

I don't really believe that it's a major snag. There's no way the trade got where it did without the teams talking money. If anything, they're arguing about $1-2M, or they're waiting for the approval of the commissioner's office, which I can't believe would be hard to get on such an inconsequential transaction.

This probably means Demp to DL since the trade won't be finalized in next hr. Don't play jones today. What incentive does he have to not screw us over?

To not look like an arrogant prick and get a black mark on his records preventing him from ever getting a decent contract again?

I agree. the rule requiring the Commish to sign off was designed to keep teams from purchasing players from another team. that's not what is going on here.

If the Cubs pay most of his salary then yes they should.

What about Nick Ungs. I know he's in triple a but is getting up there in age for a "prospect" They've never given him a shot, maybe they gave up on him. He played his HS ball in my neck of the woods.

No, they still wouldn't. They're not going to give away a guy who was their #4 prospect coming into the year for a guy who is average at best. Plus the Marlins aren't going anywhere this year, and probably next year either.

We've heard that it's a lefty from low-A Greensboro, so if that's true, it eliminates Ungs.

That's okay. I have a few nasty things I could say in return.

Honestly, as bad as Jones was playing, I would have been happy if the Cubs traded Jones, paid his entire salary, threw in a prospect, added a few more million to secure the deal and asked for nothing in return.

Alright, maybe that's stretching it a bit. But, good riddance!

I find it odd that it would be leaked that it's a lefty from Low-A, and not hear an actual name.

No kidding. If the Cubs are paying the majority of the salary, they better get something good in return. You don't get throw away prospects and pay for all the salary.

So that then leaves

Avi Rasowsky (age 24) - 19.1 IP, 5.59 ERA, 20 K/7 BB

If they are getting Jones for 500,000 or less then that should be the price of doing buisness. Especially if we are also sending them a PTBNL.

It could be that there are slightly different price tags associated with each pitcher. Or something.

If $5m is correct, FLA is paying about $2.5m, right?

For the amount the Cubs are paying the Marlins should do better than that. Not as good as Sean West, mind you, but better than that.
