Hendry loves picking up these high draft pick flame outs. None of them ever seem to work though.

Ironically, Barrett did.

I don't mind the prospect, but why get Bowen?

It doesn't seem as though he offers any more then what the Cubs already have in Hill, Soto, and Blanco.

I don't understand the concept of this trade, but now that they're Cubs I hope they do well.

It sounds like Blanco may be done for the season, if not longer.

Bowen is two years younger than Hill and probably has a little more upside. Although the two are comparable, Bowen had a bit more success at younger ages than Hill.

Soto has been banged up a little and hasn't been playing catcher full-time lately. We needed another catcher for now and Bowen makes more sense to hold onto for the future than Hill.

Soto has started at catcher 3 of the last 4 games he's played. His health is fine.

Good to hear. I was just going off of what I had been reading recently.

Hopefully we get him up here fairly soon.

I have no problem with the trade, other than the fact that it doesn't make us any better at the ML level. I like taking the chance on this Burke kid. His numbers may not look real good up to this point, but good grief, he's just 19 yrs old. If you have the tools, maybe with time, it pays off. My hope now is that Hendry does something to make a splash that helps us get closer to MIL.

You seem to enjoy posting as many comments as you possibly can in as many threads as you can, mr jersey is his name. Such fun! I think 50-page threads are much more informative than comments from actual baseball scouts, too. You keep posting, you!

I'll try.

You're posting at the rate of 300 posts/week in your 6+ weeks of membership, I'd say you're succeeding. At what, I don't know.

why do you care?

Kyler Burke represents the centerpiece of the deal from a Chicago standpoint. The outfielder, drafted in the supplemental first-round last season out of a Tennessee high school, has long-range qualities that make him attractive.

He was, understandably, surprised by the deal. A player cannot be traded until one year after he is drafted and Burke passed that mark on June 6.

“It never really crossed my mind that I would be getting traded this early,” Burke admitted. “I was shocked to be honest with you. I didn’t know who it was for at first. I really don’t know how to feel.”

“It is crazy,” Burke said of the trade. “I don’t really know how to feel. I am a little disappointed because of all the guys I have made relationships with – the coaching staff, everybody. It happens for a reason and will work out the best for me.”

“I was talking to Grady Fuson and he noted it is almost an honor to be traded for a high-caliber major league player. If you look at it that way it is not a bad thing.

“I am staying positive and will get a fresh start on things.”

The recent success of Carlos Marmol will only get the Cubs to buy some more scratch off tickets. Bully for them. Prediction--Burke will indeed be converted to pitcher, perhaps yet this summer, and never be heard from again. But, there's always hope.....

you might be right, but i'd still like to see some evidence that Tim Wilken liked him better as a pitcher than an outfielder.

I doubt just coming out of the draft, that Tim Wilken had very little to do about the trade, thats just a guess.

He doesn't seem that thrilled about coming to the Cubs.

I wouldn't want to play for the Cubs either.

Well, odds are he never will, so he's got that going for him.

Hopefully he can at least get to the Daytona version.

I'm starting to feel bad for the guy that he ended up in this organization.

I would hope that the scouting directer would be very involved with any trades made. It's not like the draft ends and he gets a two month vacation.

It would be nice if some of the "experts" in this thread did some research before posting pure, conjectural blather.

Burke was/is also a LHP with nice stuff, a low 90s FB and sharp CB in high school. Many scouts--including one Tim W., who I believe is now employed by the Cubs--liked Burke as a pitcher in last year's draft.

The Cubs will send Burke to the mound (likely in Mesa) and convert him to a pitcher a-la Carlos Marmol. In the Cubs' opinion, they just picked up a young, 19 yo lefty pitcher with promise for free.

I have also heard the Cubs are now this --><-- close to converting Ryan Harvey into a pitcher as a last-ditch effort at getting something out of his career. Harvey has always had a cannon for an OF arm (probably his best asset), and he dialed it up to 95 with the FB as a high school pitcher. What the hell, can't hurt, since Harvey will never make the big leagues as a hitter, that pipe dream is over.

Yea giving away one of the top offensive catchers ='s free

Barrett had a couple good years offensively for the Cubs, but this year is much more in line with his career numbers. Not sure that he would qualify as on of the top offensive catchers this year.

Yea this years 2 months of play completly outweigh his previous 3 years production. Never mind the fact he was starting to hit in the month of June.

Did you completely miss the part about this year being in line with his career numbers? No doubt, I'm glad the Cubs got three productive years out of him. But career #'s and this year's numbers don't qualify him as a top offensive catcher. Nevermind the fact the Cubs probably had him during his prime production years. Would be interesting if someone had statistics to show what is the average decline(or increase) of offensive production for a catcher over 30 years old.
