I don't see how a full-time Cliff Floyd in RF is a "black hole". SS, on the other hand....

I would agree. Floyd is not a big-time run producer right now, but he's not a black hole either. Also, trading for a RF means that Murton cannot come back up and contribute later in the season, and I think he can team up with Floyd again to stabilize RF after the break.

SS needs to be upgraded-I'm just not sure how many options there are around the league to be able to do that. Looking over the list of top SS's this year, Harris might be available, but he could majorly drop off at any time. After that, Tejada is the only one that might even possibly be available (as far as I know, I don't think anybody wants Alex Gonzalez).

Uh-oh. I just found a guy who fits the Cubs style completely that is currently having a great year-Christian Guzman (.331/.387/.465). I now have to root against Guzman strongly for the next month so the Cubs won't have any interest in him.

Those things go hand in hand.

SS is the bigger problem, with bottom of the barrell production. But RF is way down the list as well. Floyd is no guarantee to be a full-time producer, and while Floyd/Murton might stabilize the position, the Cubs need more than stabilization. They need production, ASAP. Floyd and Murton are both LFers. And it may be hard to find a real SS. So barring the sudden collapse of the Yankees and ARod trade, or about face by the Orioles and Tejada trade, the Cubs may have to get themselves RF help.

So we dumped a good offensive catcher who is below average on defense, for a catcher that sucks on both offense and defense and some garbage prospect and cash?

Yeah, Hendry is the worst GM in the game.

I sometimes just sit here and smile as I come home and read through the pages after an eventful day for our cubbies. i always just think to myself--man, I wish this board could have been here to hear what people said when the cubs got a terrible prespect named Sandberg and terrible hitting shortstop for Ivan DeJesus

Burke has been horrid in the minors so far - Sandberg was much better in the minors.

Truth. Gotta love the baseball cube.

Not to mention Baseball-Reference Yeah, Dejesus and his 44 OPS+ sure was worth crying over.

I'm getting real tired of this. Sandberg was never terrible and Greene knew exactly who he was getting as he worked for the Phillies for a number of years prior to cubs.

Is it that hard to really try to think? Most of the people who have posted in this thread have been more than rational with good reasons why they think the trade was bad, good, or indifferent.

What's the temperature up there on that horse of yours?

I don't see how any deal for a good hitting SS or RF is going to hinge ona trade for a backup catcher and a low A ball prospect.

I wouldn't say it hinges. I would think there's a better chance Hendry realizes they need offensive help now that Barrett has been replaced for defensive purposes. And hopefully he realizes that SS and RF are the two biggest need spots for that improvement.

So if a guy walks into the ER with a gunshot wound, no ones going to do anything about it, but if while waiting someone stabs him in the leg, then the doctors will need to take care of the gunshot wound?

For clarification:

guy=cubs

gunshot wound=SS

someone who stabs guy=Hendry

stabbing wound =losing Barrett

taking care of gunshot wound=upgrading offensively at SS

This analogy is better than it appears at first.

:D Yeah, thats why I opted to include the clarification

So who are the doctors?

Supposed to be Hendry, but turns out hes just the one stabbing the cubs.

Barret has often been a good hitter (though not this year) but has always been a bad baseball player. I enjoyed having him on the Cubs but I am willing to move in a different direction because I'm not sure this direction has worked for Barrett or the Cubs. Is he going to be the full time starter in SD or is he going to be a backup to Josh Bard.

i'm in a good mood, so i won't bust out the eye roll

I'll do it for you.

Ok you convinced me - he has looked outstanding both behind the plate and on the basepaths

Do you consider Manny Ramirez a bad baseball player?

What's a prespect?

Yeah, I checked Baseball Cube to make sure Sandberg was competent in the minors.

But seriously, I like Burke's ceiling, he has a lot of potential. But he has been awful as a pro so far. Not at all comparable to Sandberg in the minors.

i don't think the trade was a good one, don't get me wrong. but bowen is intriguing as a starting catcher. he's never been given a real shot at solid playing time until this season and thus far has showed superior discipline at the plate, something i'll take all day.

During the offseason Meph showed that a marginal upgrade from Izturis to Lugo (obv not Lugos #s so far for this season), would be a bigger upgrade than Soriano provided us. While I agree it will be hard to find a really good SS, it will be harder to find a RF who would provid us a greater marginal value than upgrading at SS. I fear Hendry will go after Griffey.

I sometimes sit back and smile when reading long threads on this board when somebody comes in out of nowhere and thinks they burnt the previous 50 pages. And then they're proven wrong by like 5 consecutive people.

All prospects are not created equally. A young prospect with a good track record up through AAA != a young prospect with a horrible statistical record at Low A != a young prospect with great numbers at A

Like I said, SS is the preference. I'm not sure they can find one though and RF would be next in-line (both short-term and long-term).

Did anyone catch Barrett's press conference? He looked and sounded pretty shook up. I'm gonna miss the guy.

It was on CSN. It looked like he was about to cry, but he turned it into a fake laugh.

It was live on Comcast Sportsnet.

I just thought of one added benefit of this trade. if Hill was tipping his pitches, the Cubs will now know what he was doing and can correct it.

Except when he was asked about Lou where he started with a laugh and then managed to get serious :)

In true Joe Morgan fashion I will tell you no I don't but I don't watch Manny every day either. Having said that Manny OPS+ 129; Barret OPS+ 80 - I believe that gives Manny just a little more room to make gaffes in the field and on the basepaths.

Ugh, Rob Bowen & Kyler Burke. Think what the Cubs could have gotten for Barret and Z if they had been traded in the offseason like they should have been.
