What are the chances that Hendry can swing a deal for Salty and Bowen becomes the back-up? Would Marshall + Jones + Soto be a starting point?

ugh, hendry said on the audio something along the lines of them being happy going forward with Bowen and Hill. He does mention Soto, but there's no sense that he'll be a part of this year's team. As usual bruce miles asked good questions. George Offman asked a good question about whether the Cubs got enough for Barrett. Jim Hendry isn't concerned about lack of offense - he's the only one, apparently. I do wish that someone would have asked a pointed question about Soto; i.e., where they see him this year and next year, and whether they consider him an option as a starter down the road.

The BA analysis mentions the 1st round pick Barrett will command if he leaves San Diego. That doesn't make it any more appetizing.

i forgot about that. I'd rather have that than what we got.

Things Hendry says to the media very rarely mean anything. Has he ever said anything but that he has confidence in the team as constructed?

Although the Soto stuff doesn't look all that encouraging. I could definitely see them going with Bowen as the main catcher with Hill backing him up. They aren't that smart when it comes to designating playing time.

Very slim. And that trade you posted will definitely not get him.

I think the Braves are more likely to move Thorman and give the 1B job to Salty.

But that involves the risk of offering arbitration and having Barrett back next year - the Cubs didn't seem like they were going to offer arbitration to him.

I'm going to be uber pissed if Soto isn't called up.

If the Cubs were looking for a strong-armed catcher in exchange for Barrett, they didn’t find one in Bowen, who has thrown out just three of 26 basestealers (12 percent) this season.

He's not Mauer's equal defensively, but Bowen's work behind the plate is his strength. He has a plus arm and quick release, allowing him to throw out 39 percent of basestealers in the minors last year.

Well, it was a rough year for Barrett this year, but I won't forget for the good things (and the unfortunate things) that he was in Chicago.

I wish him well in SD, even though I don't think his numbers will even improve becuase of that park.

While the cubs didnt seem like they were going to offer arbi to him that doesnt mean it wouldnt have been the smart thing to do.

Cubs offering arbi to Barrett at the end of the season makes this a horrible trade.

Cubs not offering arbi to Barrett at the end of the season makes this just a mildly bad trade.

Hooray for idiocy!

So we dumped a good offensive catcher who is below average on defense, for a catcher that sucks on both offense and defense and some garbage prospect and cash?

Yeah, Hendry is the worst GM in the game.

I sometimes just sit here and smile as I come home and read through the pages after an eventful day for our cubbies. i always just think to myself--man, I wish this board could have been here to hear what people said when the cubs got a terrible prespect named Sandberg and terrible hitting shortstop for Ivan DeJesus

I assume Barrett will still donate to Project 3000 every time he hits a HR?

More importantly, does this mean no cheeseburger deep dish pizzas anymore?

Burke has been horrid in the minors so far - Sandberg was much better in the minors.

I don't see how any deal for a good hitting SS or RF is going to hinge ona trade for a backup catcher and a low A ball prospect.

I wouldn't say it hinges. I would think there's a better chance Hendry realizes they need offensive help now that Barrett has been replaced for defensive purposes. And hopefully he realizes that SS and RF are the two biggest need spots for that improvement.

So if a guy walks into the ER with a gunshot wound, no ones going to do anything about it, but if while waiting someone stabs him in the leg, then the doctors will need to take care of the gunshot wound?

For clarification:

guy=cubs

gunshot wound=SS

someone who stabs guy=Hendry

stabbing wound =losing Barrett

taking care of gunshot wound=upgrading offensively at SS

This analogy is better than it appears at first.

:D Yeah, thats why I opted to include the clarification

So who are the doctors?

I don't see how a full-time Cliff Floyd in RF is a "black hole". SS, on the other hand....

RF has been a huge problem. Full-time Floyd might improve it, but it has not yet been proven. Floyd is not lock to produce, not with his injury history and lack of production last year. Plus, he's not even playing full-time, as Jones is still getting a look now and again. And they need him to not play full-time, because if he does, they will be paying him far too much money than they should.
