i don't get it, it's not like he passed somebody when he hit 600

Yeah, I feel that these things can be kind of arbitrary.

Is this really arbitrary? Only 5 players have hit 600 or more HR's.

Only 5 players had hit 599 or more before last night. I get that we like to keep track of things by tens but it really had no signifigance to me. If he passes Mays at 660, I think that's signifigant.

exactly, the milestone was 587, which was when he passed Frank Robinson for 5th place all time. 600 is just another HR between 587 and 660

Gotcha.

Baseball is full of "records" like this. Throughout the world we look at things by then tens as being more impressive. I still think it's pretty cool.

I just wanted to bragpost about being at the game last night. I did indeed cheer for Sammy on his epic night. We actually decided to go kind of at the last minute and got there barely by the first pitch (we live in Tulsa, OK). Sorry if this makes no sense at all, I just got in and I've been up for over 24 hours now.

Seats were 28 rows up on the Rangers side.

My dad's snapshot of #600, I know its not the greatest but you only get one chance eh?

Sammy is the man.

we were 2 rows behind you --- sec 30, seats 3-7. My dad got a shot very similar to yours.

Here's the quote of night (along with the whole story).

5:30 AM -- Ryne and I wake up and head for the Airport

8:45 AM -- fly to dallas

10:00 --- land, spend 2 hours "lost" in Dallas with my Dad

12:30 --- enter Six Flags

6:00 ---- exit Six Flags, head to ball game

4th inning --- Ryne is sleeping . . .dead to the World

SAMMY HOMERS. . . THE PLACE GOES NUTS.. . . . Ryne says "What hapened?" We say, "Sammy Sosa hit his 600th homer!"

Ryne said, "Good, can we leave now?"

Who knows, 660 could be in reach. Sammy hasn't been great this year, but he's a lot better than some of the scrubs you see other teams marching out there. He could probably play a couple more years, if he wants to.

Very true. The DH is a godsend for him now. If he sticks to that, he has a really good shot at getting 660.

If Sammy's willing to be more of a platoon player, he may be able to stick around for a few more years. He struggles against right-handers, but he can still hit lefties very well.

LOL that's hilarious... we were in section 30. We had an annoying fan of each team behind us trash talking in the most idiotic ways possible. At one point the Cub fan was complaining about the Hometown "Officials."

Texas is kind of annoying all the way around.

We (wife, 5 and 6 year old girls) were in section 129 last row before the concourse. Those of you in section 30 were just to our right but closer to the field. We were three seats away from the loudest guy you could imagine yelling "go home Cubbies" repeatedly he also kept screaming how they didn't need any Cubs fans in Texas. Amazingly my 5 year slept in my wife's lap through the whole thing.

We were really lucky to have the seats we did. I am an idiot and had bought two sets of four tickets in CF bleachers for Tuesday's game and didn't realize it. When we showed up for the second game we were told the tickets were invalid. Not only did they exchange them when they didn't have to, we got a major upgrade free of charge. That was one heck of an experience.

My wife didn't get great pictures of the home run, but she got some great ones of Lee's broken bat floating through the air earlier in the game.

Yeah, I guess it's no big deal that only FOUR OTHER PLAYERS IN MLB HISTORY have ever accomplished what Sammy did the other night.

The 587 Home Run Club just doesn't do it for me.

Sammy for comeback player of the year?

yes

I was thinking about that the other day, and I couldn't think of anyone else that it could be. I would loooooove it if Sammy was the comeback player of the year. He deserves it.
