I was just looking at the schedule and the Cubs are in a position to have a nice run of it...we play 3 against San Diego at home...and miss Jake Peavey...we then go to Texas, who has been the worst team in baseball and play the White Sox who are also struggling (but, as they say, you can throw the records out there...)...we then get Colorado and the Brewers at home and go to the Nationals and Pirates before the all Star break...

I think we really have a chance to make some hay over the next 3 weeks...but I also think that if we lose ground in that time span, its time to blow it up...

(The Cards play Oakland, KC, Mets, Reds, Arizona, and San Fran)

(Brewers play Twins, San Fran, KC, Houston, Cubs, Pitts, and Washington)

I sure hope so. Looking at the Brew Crew's schedule, the only team that is remotely formidable are the Twinkies. Otherwise, I'm worried that we may move along the same lines that we have for the past couple weeks, by maintaining a 5.5 game gap between the two teams.

Hopefully the Cards fall out of it completely playing some tough teams.

Capuano was DL'ed yesterday and I'm not so convinced the bubble isn't going to soon burst for Claudio Vargas, Suppan and Bush aren't exactly tearing up either - the Cubs could catch and pass these guys, stranger things have happened.

I dunno, KC seems to be raking against good NL teams.

That actually looks like a moderate, certainly not easy, schedule:

Padres - Best pitching staff in the league, even if we miss Peavy, best record in the NL and has owned us in recent past. (My prediction: 1 of 3)

Rangers - Just beat our division leaders 2 of 3, still have a decent offense, Sammy will be inspired, and our strength is pitching, which goes to die in Texas (2 of 3)

White Sox - Like you said, throw the records out, I have a bad feeling about this series (1 of 3)

Colorado - Certainly not an easy team like you seem to be suggesting but still (2 of 3)

Nationals - OK they are pretty bad (2 of 3)

Pirates - Certainly not pushovers, and have good pitching (1 of 3..just a gut feeling)

The funny thing is-if they do that (go .500 over the next 3 weeks) there's a decent possibility that the Cubs will only be 3 or 4 games out in the division at that point.

the 29-37 NL East Nats are pretty bad, but the 28-38 NL Central Bucs are no pushovers. Sosa inspiration. "bad feeling" about the White Sox. gut feelings.

Going to be some interesting matchups, for sure. After the white sox, I'm just guessing at the pitchers. (I know, Capuano won't be ready for 7/1, I'll change it when the time comes). Gotta like those matchups against the white sox. Who says we can't go down there and beat 'em like a rented mule ???

McCarthy is on the DL for Texas. I think Cameron Loe is in his spot now.

Interesting you should say that. I originally had Loe in the mix, but I changed it yesterday (or the day before) based on what ESPN was projecting.

on a personal note..... I'm loading this afternoon in Omaha for Dallas. ETA to Texas is tomorrow afternoon.

I'll be arriving there tomorrow as well. I'm not sure how much free time I'll have since it's a "family trip." Give me a call, though.

I know we're doing "family time" on Saturday and probably most of Sunday. I may be able to get out some on Monday, but I can't say for sure.

OK, I'll admit that the Nats record suprises me. We handled them quite easily. But the Pirates aren't a terrible team, and their lefties Gorzelanny and Duke (who sucks unless he plays the Cubs) will trouble us. And yes, bad feelings and gut feelings, so what? My opinion. The basic gist is there isn't a huge talent disparity in the league, and that the schedule the Cubs face is certainly not easy.

Go CUBS !!

I dont like the pitchers we have going in Texas. Lilly and Marquis could be very ugly with the long ball there.

Hopefully, Marquis will get his sinker to work out there.

Lucky for us, Texas will be without Teixeira.

Crap...we face a lot of bad pitchers...we're doomed.

ERA+ added to Freds list.

that's about 7 games out of 21 where the starter isn't at least average, and about 8 of 21 where the starter is pretty damn dominant. Nats roll over differently, and the Cubs have to face Hill instead of one of their feedbags, and he also is dominant.

Kaplan was talking last night about how the Cubs have been fortunate this year. sure, we missed Oswalt, and Peavy this series, and Smoltz in Atlanta, but for the most part the Cubs have had a hard time 'missing aces' this year.

While we do face some strong pitchers, we also face some weak and average pitchers. Let's also not forget that we will be facing some weak hitting teams.

Teams with rankings in OPS in their respective leagues:

Padres 14/16

Rangers 9/14

White Sox 14/14

Rockies 8/16

Brewers 2/16

Nationals 16/16

Pirates 15/16

We face one team that has hit well, two teams that have been near average in their leagues, and four of the absolute worst hitting teams in major league baseball. More than the pitching matchups, it is the hitting matchups that benefit us.

If the Cubs get a few breaks (we all know how likely this is) they could put together a little run before the All-Star break.
