The batter pitcher matchups do not look pretty.

Soriano is 4 for 25 with 1 HR, 1 BB, and 5 K's

Izturis is 3 for 11 with 1 2B and 1 K

Floyd is 1 for 10 with 5 K

Jones is 3 for 10 with 1 2B and 1 K

Derosa is 2 for 9 with 1 2B, 1 BB, and 1 K

Barrett 0 for 3, Ward 0 for 2, Ramirez 0 for 2

If the Cubs can manage to win this series and the next (vs SD), I'm thinking they'll pickup at least three games on the Brewers. Brewers on the road at Detroit and Minnesota for the next six - 1 and 5 is real possibility.

Washburn's last 2 starts have been:

4 2/3, 9 hits, 5 ERs

3 2/3, 9 hits, 5 runs (4 ER)

Seattle has won a pair of 4-game win streaks in their last 10 games. The only reason they haven't won 10 straight is because they have lost both of Washburn's starts in that span.

Hill has been very good in his last 2 starts.

Both keep up, Cubs win today....next 2 could be problematic, though.

Which means he'll shut us down.

Only the Fish, Phils, and Cubs are above .500 in IL play.

Oh how the mighty have fallen.

Are there games when both teams lost?

I know, I know. NL teams in interleague play.

I'm bored. Can we start the game early ???

Great. More day games equals more Cubs' losses! Ask the players.

It must be so.

CUBS are 16-17 in day games

CUBS are 12-17 at night

Go CUBS !!

It might be jumbled just a bit as I am going off memory.

No Fontenot or Pie = me not happy

I'm a bit surprised about the no Pie, but after 8-9 straight games it's all right to give him a day off, and a left-hander is the correct time to do that. Everyone else looks just about right against a LHP.

It kind of dispells the myth that the Cubs are desperate for LH bats when you figure a lineup like this leaves the Cubs with exactly 1 guy capable of hitting from the right side off the bench, switch hitting Koyie Hill.

You mean No-Hitting Koyie Hill.

Game Notes

LOUISIANA STATE CONNECTION: The former double play combination for the 2000 National Champion Louisiana State University Tigers, second baseman Mike Fontenot and shortstop Ryan Theriot, teamed up to score the first run in last night’s 2-1 victory vs. Houston … Fontenot, who went 2-for-3 on the night, doubled with 2 outs in the second inning and Theriot followed with an RBI-single.

Fontenot, who was acquired in the trade that sent Sammy Sosa to Baltimore in February of 2005, has batted .455 (5-for-11) with 3 RBI since he was recalled to Chicago prior to the game June 9 in Atlanta. ©

The Cubs starting 6-9 hitters went 4-for-11 (.364) last night … Chicago’s 1-5 hitters were a combined 0-for-14 with 2 walks.

HURLERS HEATING UP: Cubs starters have gone 5-2 with a 2.45 ERA (15 ER/55.0 IP) over the team’s last 10 games dating to June 2, and have allowed 2 or fewer earned runs in 9 of those outings … prior to this stretch, Chicago’s starters had gone 1-7 with a 5.35 ERA (44 ER/74.0 IP) in their previous 12 outings, May 19-June 1.

Since June 2, the Cubs pitching staff has recorded a 2.69 team ERA (26 ER/87.0 IP), the best ERA in the N.L. and second in the majors only to Oakland’s 1.29 ERA (12 ER/84.0 IP).

Oakland and the Cubs also sit first and second in opponent’s batting average against in that span, as the A’s have limited the opposition to a .190 average and Chicago has produced a .223 batting average against

LEFT IS RIGHT: The 3 Cubs left-handed starters in Chicago’s rotation (Rich Hill, Ted Lilly and Sean Marshall) have combined to produce a 3.15 ERA (64 ER/183.0 IP) in 29 games this season, going 11-10 with 169 strikeouts compared to just 48 walks.

Chicago’s 3.15 ERA from its left-handed starters ranks first in baseball (min. 5 starts by lefties), barely edging out the Oakland Athletics in their 18 starts by southpaws (3.147 vs. 3.1514) … thanks to Elias Sports Bureau.

The 29 starts by Cubs left-handers ranks third-most in baseball behind the Pirates (39) and the Indians (34).

More from the game notes.

THESE CLUBS ARE CLUTCH: The Mariners and Cubs rank second and third in the majors, respectively, in team batting average with runners in scoring position this season … Seattle owns a .299 mark while the Cubs have hit .287 with RISP … in 2006, the Cubs hit .262 in those situations.

Derrek Lee’s .426 batting average (26-for-61) with RISP is tied for second-best in the majors with the Dodgers Nomar Garciaparra … New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter leads the majors with a .455 mark with RISP.

Cubs hurlers have limited the opponent to a .240 batting average (124-for-517) with RISP, fourth-lowest in the N.L. and sixth-best in the majors.

VERSATILE HURLERS: The Cubs received their third home run from a pitcher this season when Carlos Zambrano hit his second home run of the year last night vs. Houston … Cubs pitchers lead the N.L. with 3 long balls in 2007, as Carlos also homered April 13 vs. the Reds and Jason Marquis hit a blast vs. the White Sox at Wrigley May 19.

The Cubs are in the 12th day (6-5) of a stretch that sees the club play 17 consecutive days through June 17 … Chicago is slated to play 5 straight series against clubs with a winning record – through 3 of those series, beginning with Atlanta from June 1-3, the Cubs are 5-5 … that doesn’t include last night’s 2-1 win over Houston, who is sporting a 26-37 record this season.

I've found that when I'm usually having a bad day, the Cubs make it worse.

Looks bad for today.
