Those both make sense. Considering there was no real reason to hit Soriano, I think Hudson should have just been ejected right away.

No, but if they throw very close inside, the umps could call them for tyring to hit a player and still be tossed. It's takes away from pitching inside. And, then the pitchers won't go too close inside for fear of accidentally hitting a player and getting tossed.
