If we pull within 4 I'm officially going to go from cautiously optimistic to dangerously invested.

And I'll be right there with you unfortunately.

Keep in mind, even if they win, they will still be 4 games under .500.

I'm saving any optimism until they at least reach 500 again.

I feel like we've had this conversation before...

As always I'm telling myself not to get excited, but I can't help myself I'm excited again. Yes, I'm a sucker...

More from the game notes.

CONTROL FREAKS: Since May 30, Cubs hurlers have allowed just 19 walks for an average of 2.1 walks per game over the club’s last 9 contests … prior to that, Chicago’s pitching staff had issued 22 free passes over a 5-game stretch, May 25-29, for an average of 4.4 walks per game …

the team is 22-14 when it allows 3 or fewer walks in a game compared to a 5-18 mark when itallows 4 or more walks per game.

© Cubs starting pitchers have walked 3 or fewer in each of the team’s last 13 starts since May 26 at Los Angeles.

THAT’S A RELIEF: Chicago’s relievers have posted a 1.69 ERA (4 ER/21.1 IP) this month after recording a 5.52 (45 ER/73.1 IP) in May … in the team’s last 6 games, Cubs relievers have allowed just 1 earned run in 15.1 innings of work (0.59 ERA) … the Cubs bullpen combined to toss 3.2 scoreless innings Monday night in Milwaukee, their longest scoreless outing of the season since tossing 5.0 shutout innings April 13 vs. Cincinnati.

Cubs hurlers have allowed just 4 runs over the

team’s last 3 games, good for a 1.33 ERA (4 ER/27.0

IP) … they have limited the opponent to a .158

batting average in that span and have walked 7

while striking out 27.

Murton should always play ahead of Jones.

Even with the track record Jones has against Hudson, it is awfully hard to justify playing him.
